SOS name checked by Edwyn Collins in Electronic Sound Magazine

Postby MarkyC » Fri Jun 21, 2019 4:38 pm

I'm sure a few of you read Electronic Sound magazine.
Thought it was interesting that this month's article on Rip It Up by Orange Juice name checked SOS

"I knew I wanted to use the Roland TB-303 for the bass line. It was a new thing at that point. I discovered it in Sound On Sound Magazine, so I'd heard of it before....."

This was in 1982 which is odd as I thought SOS started in 1985 :?

Hmm, 1982 - he probably meant Electronics & Music Maker (or possibly International Musician).

There wasn't a lot else around at that point:

The memory plays funny tricks about times past and chronology....

... I was once discussing JFK's assassination with a US citizen of roughly my vintage as one of the defining "I remember exactly where I was when..." moments of my life. She responded in the same vein, saying, "Yes; because it was Wednesday I was at.... and I always went there on Wednesdays." When I told her that it was actually a Friday she was adamant that I was wrong until I was able to prove it to her. She was very disconcerted to discover that she'd mis-remembered something that was so significant to people of our generation.

As the founding Editor of SOS, I can emphatically confirm that Edwyn has got his memory synapses slightly crossed in that interview -- but thanks for the shout-out, Ed!

Sound On Sound was launched on 18 October 1985, as our "About SOS" page attests: www.soundonsound.com/about-sos

As desmond rightly says, the first major UK review of the TB-303 was published in Electronics & Music Maker (E&MM), which would be confirmed by perusing his fabulous music magazine archive website.
