3rd party content delays when loading the site

Postby Eddy Deegan » Tue Jan 28, 2020 6:03 pm

SOS is the only website (other than online banking) I disable my ad-blockers and anti-tracking plugins for, which to date has been no problem at all. Recently however, I've noticed that the forum often hangs for a while while trying to contact 3rd party content from Facebook and Google (presumably some kind of web tracking or analytics they do).

Has anyone else noticed this? Is this something that SOS measure server-side at all, or is it just tough luck for me?

I can live with it, but it can be a little frustrating at times, especially as on other sites I block all that stuff which makes everything faster so I'm not used to it.

It can take between 5 and 10 seconds to complete that connection sometimes, during which everything basically freezes unless I cancel the page and retry (which has varying degrees of success).

Here's an example of what I'm talking about - I ran the Firefox debugger while clicking 'Reply' to make this post:

As you can see, the page took nearly 13 seconds to load. The worst offenders seem to be Google and secure.facebook.net in my experience, but it varies and has been quite noticeable for a while now.

I'm on a coax link to fibre in the road. I don't think it's my connection as everything else seems quite fast.

Can't say I've noticed it here. Maybe your computer just doesn't like Facebook (it's in good company!)

No problems here. Perhaps it might be the path some of the third-party resources are loading over has some problems (eg DNS issues with your provider, or routing problems), that may resolve on their own in a day or two...

Thanks guys - if it's just me then that's my problem of course!

I'll keep an eye on it and hopefully it'll sort itself out.

Around the time you originally posted I was getting an ‘unable to connect to server’ message on my iPad browser. So might have been a server refresh.

Aha, that could well be the culprit Andy, as even on my 3Kbps connection I'm not noticing lags like this.

These things, my money is always on the browser cache - if that (or better its index) gets messed up, you may experience a linear scan which slows things down tremendously.

As if in response to my original post, after a few days of being quite bad it seems to have cleared up significantly all by itself. I did try the usual cache clearing, also an alternative browser but they didn't make any difference. I suspect it's ISP related, possibly a CDN or remote cache issue.

Fingers crossed the trend continues. Thanks all for the info showing it to be an issue nearer my end of the pipe in some way!
