A bane of mine but I'm stuck with them is boxes. Lots of empty cardboard boxes. All that flash kit comes in boxes and if you ever think you might sell something sometime in the future (or even if you don't because circumstances change) then you'd better keep the boxes. I've got enough boxes to keep a small recycling plant going for a week. There's a wall of them in our loft.

Yep, turns out I've been mispronouncing his name for years :(

So which is it? I can't quite make it out either.

Its like the Worcester thing - spelt one way and pronounced another. As a kid one of our doctors had the same surname and the same pronunciation.

That's like one song to the tune of the same song isn't it?

Good video!

I'll add torches (electrical, preferably!), mic stand drink holders and RAM mounts for phones/tablets to the boring list.

I have the opposite problem, my surname is "Coghill" simple enough you'd think but I've had more variations than one could shake a spear at... 'Cos it's fairly unusual people seem to think it can't possibly sound like it looks.

I did have a mate called Inglis and he pronounced it like it was spelt...

  • a handheld label maker
  • an assortment of audio adaptors (rarely used, but very useful when you need to)
  • wire strippers, fine wire snippers, a couple of small screwdrivers, a soldering iron and some solder
  • a continuity tester
  • a pen and a notebook
  • a tape measure
  • dust covers

I think I'll go lie down now

You had my attention at label maker

Black Chinagraph pencil for mixer scribble strip, easy to remove.
Two pairs of glasses, one for computer, one for score reading, and manuals.
Big box of cable adaptors.
Giant note book and loads of pens,
Giant crate of leads.
3 tool boxes, portable desk vice.
Dymo labeller.
Two home made surround boxes given to me by my late friend Mike Skeet, they are a source of inspiration.
An amplifier used by Brian Eno on the installation "Self Storage" a source of inspiration.
John Cage's book "Silence" always on my studio desk, and a constant source of everything.

[*] a tape measure

Unfortunately, I really recognised that one.

Step 1 - lust after new, probably unnecessary piece of equipment
Step 2 - Google for manual, reviews and ‘no talking’ demos
Step 3 - start to think about where I could possibly squeeze it in if I rearranged everything
Step 4 - check manual for L x W x H
Step 5 - tape measure....

Sometimes I miss out Step 2 and go straight to Step 3.
Rather against the grain of this discussion! :headbang:

Are kettles too interesting for this list? I couldn't imagine having a studio without tea/coffee (or other drink of choice) making facilities.

Arpangel beat you to that, with two pairs of glasses, one for computer screen, one for fine detail in manuals, etc!
Very much my necessity and approach. :geek: :ugeek:

Of course, you have to have both, and that applies to all studio equipment...
