Is there any possibility at all for SynthFest 2020?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. I couldn't think of anywhere else appropriate.

Sorry for the delay in getting a response. I have flagged this up for Paul Gilby and he should be along with an update shortly.

Unfortunately there will be no SynthFest UK this year but we'll be back in October 2021.

The show takes many months to organise and we usually start in March with tickets going on sale in late April. Due to the lockdown and general economic uncertainty, we were not able to start the planning process.

We've been caught between a rock and a hard place, as many of the exhibitors were worried, and still are, about their business so could not commit to booking stand space. That's very understandable and, on our part, we could not guarantee the show would go ahead. Plus the University of Sheffield Octagon venue could also not guarantee they would be able to operate.

Even now, all being well, the University are facing a real challenge working out how to allow students back in October with safe social distancing measures in place. One or Two metre spacing, one-way walking routes, queues outside the venue etc. We could not see how that would work for SynthFest as it attracted over 1,000 visitors in 2019 and this year the venue would not allow that number of people in the building.

So, all in all, we were faced with a totally unpredictable situation and felt it best to skip this year and make the 2021 event even better!

In the meantime, we've launched the SOS Electronic Music podcast channel where you can hear synth related shows each month. There are two shows live now: Suzanne Ciani talking about Buchla and David Vorhaus talking about his involvement with the early Fairlight.

I suspect everyone here will agree with the wisdom of that decision.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I thought that would be the case, but wanted to be sure. I usually include this in a week's holiday in Derbyshire. If my fave B&B are open I might still do that anyway.

The sensible thing to do. Before the world turned upside down I was planning to make the long trek to Sheffield for this year's SynthFest. So now I can pencil in a visit in 2021 instead :)
