It is that first step that I want making easier.

We obviously have different opinions on this, but I don't think SOS should put resources into a perceived problem, just in case it exists.
You have already said there is no evidence of this "trembling newcomer".
From my (not extensive) experience on other forums visited on a daily basis, both music related and non music related, this SOS forum is by far the friendliest of those especially to newcomers.
YMMV

Pardon me! I did NOT say "there is no evidence of a trembling newcomer*" ! I said I had no evidence of SoS forum being unfriendly, because it AIN'T.

Just thought of another noob section 'advantage'? Take the thread about needing a new AI. This has now diverted into a discussion as to whether or not you need an SSD to run Win 10! (and yes, I know I contributed).

Such OT wanderings would I hope be jumped on PDQ in a noob section.

Dave, please be realistic. Most topics veer OT eventually. Certainly Mods and SOS staff simply do not have time to police this. It's one of the foibles of every discussion forum I have ever visited (and let's not even include Facebook or Twitter in there, either).

I can't see how having a Newbies forum would be any different.

I totally agree and I can ramble with the best of them but, the noob section I frequent often has the members cautioning "that is not what the OP asked!"

As someone mentioned earlier, newb sections tend to be frequented by a few diehards. In effect, self policing.

This is getting tedious. This forum will not be having a noob section. It's been discussed at considerable length both in the public forums and amnogst the mod team. All the pros and cons have been carefully weighed and considered, and a decision reached against a separate newbie forum. Case closed
