Phantom Posts

Postby Folderol » Fri Sep 04, 2020 9:39 am

I've been seeing really weird behaviour on the site the last few days, where forums are marked as having new entries, yet when going to them there is nothing new at all.

The strangest of all was this morning when the musicians lounge was marked as having a new post from Mike Stranks on the Eric Clapton thread, but going there showed the latest entry by Arpangel that I'd already seen.

Refreshing the index page then gave the correct info

I occasionally change my mind and delete posts; maybe others do too.

Yep, that was the reason. Earlier I saw in the moderator logs that Mike had deleted his own post.

There is a small delay on the 'Latest Forum Activity' info box, and people do delete their own posts more often than you might think.

We see a similar thing as mods when we disapprove posts from spammers. They get binned without ever making it to public view but often there will be a few of them hanging around in the summary of recent posts for a little while afterwards.

Today I logged in and went to my control panel but I didn’t have permission to enter Manage My whatevers. A log out and log back in fixed it. I have a screenshot if that would be useful.

Ah!
Thank folks. I didn't notice that you could delete posts - you can't on most sites I visit - makes perfect sense now.

Ignore the post count, I have no idea what I'm doing...

I've seen that a few times over the last few months - a thread that I've read will display has having unread posts a while later despite multiple refreshes. It only happens to certain threads though.
