Well, the 3 new messages message has just this moment disappeared, hopefully for good, this time. Thanks. Interestingly if I go into Private messages from My Control Panel then inbox is showing as Inbox(1) even though all messages are read. However I can live with this since it's not at all "in your face".

I never had the problem in the first place and all my notifications have behaved impeccably before, during and since Spamgate!
Mind you, I suspect the same is true of anyone who had no unread messages when the inboxes were pruned by the Great Forum Gardener :)
