We all -- every single forum member -- all have notification of three messages that do not exist. It's the result of a spammer that managed to get past our defences due to a well-intended but apparently misjudged system modification. The spammer has been removed and the site security restored. Unfortunately the ghost pm message will require some hardcore back room fixing which will be attended to on Monday.

There is a new spammer. I’ve just received a message addressed to Dear BLINDDREW similar to the previous one but from a different account.

I would suggest stopping all PMs until the breach is found and sealed.

Please use the facility in the received PM to report it. That flags up the offender to the Mod team so we can start housekeeping. Otherwise we can only identify the culprit if they try to PM us.

A change went in over the weekend that unknowingly introduced a vulnerability. Spammers are exploiting this and sending direct PMs. The mods are eliminating them as fast as possible but the record of the new messages is staying in the system. This is also being worked on.
Hold the faith people. ;)

I was also asked to "review" my message before it was posted (no, I did not select "Preview"),
so I'm wondering if this is part of the SOS forum mod mentioned above, or, alternatively, part of the hacker's dastardly plot?

No, the review request appears automatically when the thread to which you're responding has received another post while you were still creating your reply.

It affords an opportunity to review what you have typed in light of what another respondent has just posted...

While I have your attention ;) , could I request that the box entitled Notify me when a reply is posted be automatically ticked as a default? :thumbup:
