We're back to Sound On Sound in the rotation (yay!), and SOS Jul 89 has just gone up, and there is another 11 SOS issues next in the queue.

(I've extended the most popular mags - SOS, MT and E&MM - to 12 issues per rotation rather than 6, due to popularity.)

There's been a number of improvements that's worth mentioning - many back end improvements and additions, and many smaller front end display and usability improvements. Some of the larger ones (tags, and related gear) are covered in the blog post here: http://www.muzines.co.uk/blog/updates-improvements/29, and those things improve some of the long-standing shortcomings in gear metadata.

Many thousands of gear items have been tagged, and this will be an ongoing process as we (usefully) tag gear as another way to search (but as tagging can be essentially infinite, I'm restricting this to useful tags rather than going overboard.)

We also now handle internal links - so if an article directly refers to another article in a previous issue, that text will now link to that article as a convenience.

It's a great piece of archivism you're doing here, as well as a great resource for everyone else. :)

Thanks chaps - note, I'm not fishing for compliments (though they are nice and appreciated  ), just posting occasional updates for people following along...

As far as tagging goes, this is my current outstanding list of tags yet to apply to gear:-

Tape Size (1/4”, 1/2”, 2” etc)
Tape Speed (Cass Standard, Cassette Hi, 15ips, etc)
Mic type (Ribbon, Condenser, Dynamic etc)
Amps (Combo) - Guitar Amp, Bass Amp, Drum Amp, Keyboard Amp
Speakers - Studio, PA, Hifi
Guitar Style - Strat, Tele, SG etc
Bass Style - Precision, Jazz etc
Drums - Cymbals, Hardware, Kit, Shell, Practice Kit
Drums Electronic - Digital, Analog, Kit, Brain, Pads, Multipad (Octapad, drumKat etc)
Guitar FX (types, reverb/delay etc)
Guitar Synth - Guitar, Bass, Brain
Headphones - Closed/Open/In Ear
MIDI Controller - Wind
Sequencer - CV/gate, MIDI

Gear Families (DX Synths, JV Synths, XV Synths, RX Drum Machines, TR Drum Machines etc)

Other suggestions are welcome and I've already done a bunch like polyphonic aftertouch, synthesis types, poly/mono, digital/analog synths etc etc

Tagging is quick for gear I know well, but a bit more hassle for gear I don't know inside out, as often I have to go hunt for information, and sometimes that info isn't even in the articles on the site, so I have to externally find out. While some people could scan through the mic list and reel-off the mic type for most of them, I can only get about 20% on sight..! So I just do various categories at a time. It would be nice to crowdsource some of this out but realistically it's more work to provide a user-tagging feature and let people go at it (and verify the results) so I'd rather just treat it as an ongoing task...

Part 3 of David Mellor's excellent "Inside the Synclavier" series has just gone up with SOS Aug 89, and he has graciously dug out his original recordings to go alongside the article for us:

http://www.muzines.co.uk/articles/insid ... avier/5620

Very cool to hear the finished track and the Synclavier in action.

He's also made a blog post about this:

Very cool!

And we close out the 1989 issues of SOS with our 250th active issue! Whoop whoop!

That's about a quarter of the way to our ultimate goal (well, we've added some publications since the initial goal, but we're in the ballpark.)

We're also now officially past the half way point with the early Sound On Sounds...

Keep on grinding on... :headbang:

I'm finding the SOS issues are really quite nice to do - the process is quite straightforward as the layouts are clean and uncomplicated. The earlier stuff like HSR and E&MM is quite a bit more work, plus, you know, all those electronics projects and parts lists... :headbang:

And now we've reached the ripe ol' mature age of... three.

The usual yearly rundown, and some new stuff - for all the details, check the blog post:
http://www.muzines.co.uk/blog/now-we-are-three/31

The TL;DR is the Advert stuff is much improved, we've added a Stats page full of whizzy interactive graphs (for people that like that stuff) and we've added the first non-UK publication - Polyphony - it will be great to build out a complete archive of this, as existing archives are pretty poor...
