Displaying images

Postby Sam Spoons » Mon Jun 12, 2017 10:40 am

I use dropbox and, more recently, Google Drive to store any images I might want to use on the forum. The new forum doesn't seem to want to display images from a dropbox public link. What am I doing wrong?

Nothing, last month Dropbox changed its behaviour and now no longer renders HTML content - so you can no longer host images on Dropbox and have them display inline on forums.

Dropbox also changed the behaviour of public folders too, you now have to share everything, public folders no longer work as they used to.

Thanks desmond.

Google Drive should work OK though... post a link to an image here and I'll do some tests.

I'm not sure that Google Drive will work for this either, all these file platform services don't want to render in html, then just want a link to the file on their service that someone can download or copy to their own account.

So you can post links to the images, but they won't render inline in a forum post, they will be a link to a file you can view/download from Dropbox or Google Drive respectively.

I just tried it and Google Drive behaves the same way, no inline html rendering. If you want to share pics/videos etc, you either need to use some other image/video/file sharing service that allows this, or get your own web hosting account and host the files yourself.

It is a pain, I found Dropbox pretty convenient for this (and Dropbox had been telling users that this change was coming for at least a year).

Thanks for clearing that up too, desmond. I'm not a Google Drive user. Doesn't Google offer Google Photos for this purpose?

A quick search found this site: https://postimage.io -- never used it and this does not come with recommendation, but try it?

I just did a quick test with Google Photos - it behaves the same way.

Shared links to the image are links to the page on the service you can view that image, not links directly to the image asset itself, so again, you can't use this to have the image rendered in a forum post. Google Photos is a photosharing service, not an image host, it seems all of these large services don't want people to use them for this purpose.

Thought I'd try that post image.io site myself.

OK, not exactly great... the example above used their thumbnail code but it doesn't open the larger image on their site.

Other options just give a link, which is not what the OP was looking for.

Photobucket and Flikr are among the best known image hosts. I use photobucket when I need to put up an image for the forums.

Any suggestions for a simple, free image sharing site that won'y mother the ass off me?

If one wants to use Dropbox, it's possible to simply use the direct image link :)

Right, the link seems to last very little time.
