Re: Self promotion
that would be good: something like 50 posts before you can publish in that hypothetical sub-forum (just brainstorming)
I'm member of another forum that reminds me a lot to this one (relatively small community - not massive - with high quality contents) and there is a self promotion sub-forum. I never see it full of spam shit despite there's no 3 1st posts moderation rule like here.
... and like said above it would be good to know what people's up to, and potentially come to know you guys in action.
... and of course come to my bands gig the next 21st and buy my EP YOU MOTHERF :round1: :round1:

Re: Self promotion
Technical possibilities aside, that sounds promising Andy.
If we set the minimum posting count to about 4000 we'd be able to exclude all the wrong people... ;)
More seriously, like ore_terra, i was thinking of around 50 posts as i read your thread.

Ignore the post count, I have no idea what I'm doing...
Re: Self promotion
I'd be very happy with that too.

Re: Self promotion
I think this is a good way to make it work. 50 posts as a the cut off would work as well for me.

Re: Self promotion
On one hand it sounds like spammers generally post once but I could be wrong. On the other hand 50 would imply community member. Instead of "Frequent Poster" perhaps a new designation "Community Member" would kick in at 50 posts, assuming the mods have control over this count. And assuming instead of working their butts off to get the mag out the door somebody has the time to make this happen

Re: Self promotion
if a spammer would be patient enough to participate and "make community" until his post no. 49 and then in the 50 unleash all the spam he's got inside... that would deserve some kind of award

For me too - you really would have to be part of the community after 50 posts

But you only need to spend an hour on word association and you're there. Posts there still add to your count and you don't need any real interaction with the community.

Re: Self promotion
True, but that would be an impressive level of dedication to get to a point where you're spamming to a very limited audience. I'd be inclined to applaud that level of commitment (no matter how misplaced). :)

Re: Self promotion
well... I didnt get into that post until last week, so I was just the opposite case: more than 50 posts and none in word association :shh:Wonks wrote:But you only need to spend an hour on word association and you're there. Re: Self promotion
I'm just saying that a limit like 50 is easy to achieve in a short space of time, and then you're free to post spam in other forums here. It's probably not usual spammer behaviour to do that, but someone just very keen on self-promotion could try it out.

Indeed. We cannot know in advance of a trial, but my personal belief is that there would be the occasional PIB who would be a nuisance but not enough of them to spoil it for everyone else - much like the rest of the site in fact. And of course we could always let Folderol loose on them.

Re: Self promotion
 I certainly condone the concept of a sub-forum, as anything that helps community spirit I am in favour of (within reason).
We can indeed create a new sub-forum that has the same permissions as Musician's Lounge, namely it is only seen by registered members, and would still be subject to the new members' 3 post approval before you can freely post in it.
With a bit of jiggery-pokery we could ensure its topics do not show in the Latest Forum Activity righthand sidebar.
We could create a back-office 'group' for the Self-Promotion sub-forum so that only members of this group could post there. Then we could filter the membership and copy every member with 'nn' current posts and assign them to the new group. Mods and Admins could then manually add members after initial setup, or whenever someone contacts the Mod team and asks "how do I post in that great SP forum?" -- via a suitable sticky telling them to send a PM to the mods or use the Report This Post function (exclamation mark ! in a circle to the right of the topic/reply title).
I think a sub-forum is far better than sticky post(s) in ML, as it keeps each item separated and people can respond to just that topic and it'd be obvious, whereas stuff can get lost in these multi-page topics (and technically, they are a nightmare for the forum database and our caching mechanisms to handle correctly, so I don't wish to encourage even more of such threads).
I'm sure we could get it working. Hugh, what sayeth yee?
