How about a 'One Synth' challenge?

For fans of synths, pianos or keyboard instruments of any sort.

I'd be tempted to enter myself but a) I only have softsynths, and b) I am HOPELESSLY new to synths.

Maybe if we do this again next year I'll be better equipped!

I'm struggling for time at the moment, not that i know anything about synths and nor can I play the keyboard, but it's all just twiddling knobs isn't it? How difficult can it be?

So, to address a few points (I like to batch process this kind of stuff) :

1. Points. Sorry, they don't mean prizes in this competition - anyone taking part can demand a KitKat. But please feel free to self-score and feel smug if you get things right. I'm all up for bragging rights being honoured here...

:D

2. I think we're up to about 5 or 6 at the moment. I have 3 or 4 that have been sent through, a couple more have expressed an interest and I'm planning on taking part as well. The more the merrier I say!

3. Time - guys, we have nearly three weeks so still plenty of time to sign up.

4. Ability - seriously ... you think I'd be doing this if I could programme properly?? ;) Go on - have a bash with whatever you think sounds good. Anything is viable. There's loads of free midi files if you want a song to base it on. Half the point of this is to drive us to actually dive into a synth and see what's what. We all start somewhere and we never stop learning. At least ... that's what I keep saying to myself to stop me weeping in the small hours....

;)

Right, I'm off to check out bulk buy chocolate prices...

Was there a decision on the use of external FX?
I've followed the thread but the "rules" are tending towards a Morning Crescent-esque opacity

And what do we think the chances are of this running in subsequent months?
I'm considering having a go but time is in short supply presently :(

Hmmm.
I learned the hard way that "I'm busy now, so I'll join in next time" can be a big mistake :(

Logarhythm - sorry if it's not clear. It's a bit of a learning curve here. Yes - FX and automation are quite welcome. There's a wealth of sound mangling out there, so I'll leave it to your own discretion how much you use.

I hadn't thought about running another one later, but it's a possibility. But I think it will be a couple of months before the next one - I'd rather do fewer and give people time to work on stuff than try and cram things in. And it will take much soul searching to decide on the confectionary choice for a prize ...

Thanks Dave.
TBH it seems like an interesting exercise anyway and I've enjoyed the challenge thus far, so will press on at my own pace as time allows and hopefully finish something in time to coincide with a future one if not this one

I've gone so far as to ... ahem ... "liberate" ... a whole new synth from a mate. So this challenge will be me exploring it a bit.

Which is nice...

I would love to join in, but this really isn't the time for me.

That said, I will be doing a one 'synth' (hint - it only has six knobs!) live performance later this year, so I may come back with a recording of that performance at some point.

I'd encourage anyone to give it a go - these things are very good for the creativity!

Having lots of fun trying this and pleased with results so far - but its a very slow process :)

Hopefully I'll be finished by the end of the month

Couldn't agree more!
It's really forced me out of my comfort zone and I've no idea what I'm actually creating, where it's going or whether it will turn into anything, but I've found it really good fun so far

Ok, I'm in on this. It sounds like a bag of old nails, well, actually that might sound better, but it should give you all a nice low bar to walk over. :)
