White noise when using Zoom H6 as a USB interface

Postby theargus1984 » Thu Jun 21, 2018 10:26 pm

Hello!

Whenever I use my Zoom H6 as a USB interface I can hear a constant white noise coming both from the speaker on the back of the device and when I have headphones plugged in. The white noise is present even when the gain is turned all the way down. When the gain is turned up, the mic gets louder but the white noise still remains at the same volume.

I'm recording into a powerful PC that is used for video editing. I'm using Adobe Audition for the recording software.

Things I've tried so far:

- Different locations (ruling out radio interference)
- Different PCs. Issue is present on all.
- Different USB cabl
- Different XLR cable
- Turning phantom power off

Using the H6 as a standalone recorder (i.e. writing directly to the SD card) works just fine.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this issue? Thanks in advance!

There will always be some noise coming from the speaker or headphones but normally it's so low as to not be a problem. To give us some sort of idea, how close do you have to be to the speaker to hear the noise?

I can only conclude that the monitoring gain on the Zoom is jacked up (post VC) when in USB interface mode but confess I cannot see why!

Have you asked Zoom? Might be a firmware update fix.

How are you powering the H6 - via USB or a separate power supply? Is there anything else apart from headphones connected to the H6? I'm wondering whether it could be some kind of grounding problem - possibly a ground loop or a noisy power supply.

I had A noise problem... went away when I used battery power.

I have a similar setup and a similar problem, except that the white noise comes and goes randomly. Sometimes everything works hours without any trouble and other times I can't get rid of the noise. Can't see the logic.

In Adobe Audition's Hardware settings I use ASIO device class and "Zoom H and F Series Multi ASIO". If the noise starts and I change the I/O Buffer Size, the noise stops, but usually the noise comes back in a little while. I think the noise has something to do with the Audio Hardware settings.

I have tried to follow some instruction found in the internet, but without final solution.

Sounds like a buffer size issue. Try working with the largest buffer available and see if that cures it, and if so, experiment with progressively smaller buffers until you find the minimum size that allows your computer to work properly with the Zoom interface.

It may also be that your computer is busy doing all manner of non-audio related things which is why a larger buffer is required. Turning off unnecessary functions (like email polling etc) may well help. Others here can offer far more guidance on that than I.

Thank you Hugh for validating my hunch. I am using both desk top and lap top (both PC) and they both seem to need individual buffer settings. At the moment Surface Pro 3 needs buffer size 256 in order to run in Zoom H6's Stereo Mix Mode and three years old Dell desk top needs 512, which raises latency issues. Anyway, I getting closer to get things done. Thanks!
