Re: One Synth Challenge III - This time it's personal
But how would you know it's a lovely band pass filter and not exceptionally careful selection and mixing of sounds?

His ears are now finely honed through the wonderful acoustic dampening properties of snow - we'd best watch out
Plus, there are other boxes in the room with nice band pass filters on them, but don't tell him!

Re: One Synth Challenge III - This time it's personal
hello my dears
i am working on dancefloor orientated music atm, which doesn't follow the "song" idea. the music is harmonical, but listening to the last season contenders kinda lets my stuff fall out of context. it is made with one synth nonetheless (drums and arrangement made in a DAW).
should i partake? should i post it for your critical listening pleasure?

Hi and welcome to the forum!
We like all kinds of music round here - country AND western .... ;)
Seriously, go for it. Have some fun and see what you can get out of a single synth. Different is usually good in my book!

Glad to see you paraphrased there as the original quote was "We like both kinds of music round here - Country AND Western" :D

Re: One Synth Challenge III - This time it's personal
The last time I used my MiniBrute which I was on the verge of selling, but the result gave me new respect for the MiniBrute. A similar thing has happened this time too. No clues as to what I've used, but this synth is essentially very limited, but I feel I've managed to squeeze out a result that you wouldn't think it capable of!

I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's work!
After a couple of setbacks and false starts I've finally figured out what I'm doing :)

Re: One Synth Challenge III - This time it's personal
I've finished! Had a mad couple of days. Sketched something out on Friday night, with the help of a few whiskeys. The following day when sober I pulled out a few parts that were worth working on, threw away the rest and got busy. The melody line I developed in my head while walking the dog :D
I am quite amazed at what I have squeezed out of what is in essence quite a limited synth.

I've had a few entries so far and it's been a joy for me as a couple are synths that are in my 'ooh - I should really have a look at xxx' category. I'm looking forward to hearing some more.
I've had a slightly more productive week this week - I've turned the computer on....
Hey - this is why we have deadlines. OK ... this is why _I_ have deadlines ...

I can't remember what we did previously, but would it be a good idea to give a list of the synths used (obviously not in the same order as the tracks are presented) to give those of use with a tin ear a fighting chance of identifying the synth used?

Re: One Synth Challenge III - This time it's personal
I think we've generally worked on a principle of :
1. publish everything blind.
2. After a day or so (or a few comments so that it's not the next post!) say who the contributors were. maybe a breakdown of the synthesis types used
3. after another couple of days, we give the full results
I originally was up for the 'guess the synth' but it's now just too hard - the sheer quantiity, quality and low cost of synths today mean that it's just too hard. Last time round, I was completely flumoxed by an entry done completely on a Prophet 6 - and I own one! Likewise Roland Alpha Juno.
And in some respects, that's what makes this the most interesting. By picking one synth and using it for lots of stuff, we naturally seem to avoid the more cliched sounds. Which is half the point - I have a killer 'soft pad' on my JD800/990, and I've always reached for it in the past, but lately I'm starting to look to other things. We will always have certain sounds which we are drawn to, but sometimes moving out of comfort zone is a really good thing.
(I'll come back to this topic after the results - one of the entries almost threw me and I'm curious to see if it was a 'non comfort zone' thing, or a deliberate attempt to throw us off.)

I think this challenge also encourages you to just twiddle knobs and push buttons to see what happens. I've lost count of the times when doing that has produced something that I had no idea was even possible! :bouncy:

Dave B, pardon my ignorance, but how do I PM you? In "My Control Panel" when I click on Private Messages I'm told I am not authorized to use this feature. Being new on this forum do I need a certain amount of post before I can PM?
I've got a dropbox link to my track. Now the challenge is how to get it to you. Your challenge is actually listening to it!

Because we are a target for spammers new members' first 3 posts have to be approved by a moderator. And because spammers are so creative they abused PMs as well so we had to disallow new members sending PMs as well until they had 3 posts approved.
The good news is that I have now approved your 3rd post and you will find that you are now allowed to send PMs :)

Well thank you! I’ve sent off the link to my track.
I used the first synth I ever bought. Which shouldn’t give too much away. I could be twelve. Or seventy.
I’m am really looking forward to what others have done.
