One Synth Challenge III - This time it's personal
Re: One Synth Challenge III - This time it's personal
I have no hope of guessing the actual synth used, so These are my best guess at the type of sound generation.
01 Wavetable
02 Samples - If I'd heard just from about 3 min onwards I'd have said it sounded like Yoshimi :o
03 Mixture of wavetable and samples
04 Samples and... something else
05 Analog? Modular?
06 Modular and/or FM synth
07 Wavetable and something else (different to 4)
08 Samples. Have I heard this synth on a previous OSC :?
09 Analog. Oh wait... is this some kind of multi-thingy?
10 Modular
11 Sounds very FMish, but I'm wondering if that's a ruse to put us off - too obvious?
12 Wavetable
13 Wavetable + FM
14 Hmm. something analog I think
I'll need quite a few more listens before I want to talk about the content.
P.S.
If mine was in there I wouldn't lie about it, but I might not be too obvious in the description

Sorry Will - you got mine wrong :-)
PS: You're right though, in that it's really hard to tell with some of them!

Oh well, one down... just another 12 to go ;)
Oh, and just a quick thought. Number 14 sounds very much like what I'd expect from either the Elf, or Martin Walker if they had slipped something in incognito.

Interesting, you've put the same for both of mine but you too have got it wrong, but wrong differently to Eddy. As has been said, it is difficult to tell in a production, which is why I've not even tried ;)

Just had a listen - well done all!
Not having owned many synths I couldn’t begin to guess but some wonderful timbre and texture combinations.

Re: One Synth Challenge III - This time it's personal
I'll take a few random potshots here and there. I'm guessing Track 8 is some old digital synth like an Ensoniq VFX or something. Love that crazy vibrato like a cat on acid.
First thing I thought when I heard those submarine sounds!
PS Thanks for organising this Dave! It's good fun. Some nice stuff in here.
Track 12...oh, it's difficult to tell analog from VA these days. I think old analog. Dunno...Polysix.
Track 13...this is a fun one. Reminds me of Vangelis or something. Nice crackles. Modern analogue...?

Re: One Synth Challenge III - This time it's personal
I'm saying they are all by Rich - I definatley get two correct ;)
As already proved in previous challenges -Its almost impossible to know whats used !
But here are my guesses for fun:-
1/ Modern analog / VA
2/ Something digital
3/ Analog / VA ?? (Wondering why there is a minute silence at the end of this one ?)
4/ This get pretty huge in the Bass dept !, realistic instruments and some monster sounds - workstation
5/ Samples / FM
6/ Big Analog mono - Maxi Brute ?
7/ Yoshimi ?
8/ Wavetables - Waldorf ?
9/ One of my Favs here - Digital
10/ Pretty much sounds like the original - Pro One (BTW Nice vocals)
11/ Sounds very FM - DX21
12/ Mono Analog - Monologue ?
13/ Modern analog - Deepmind
14/ I know who this is, but not what they used - Workstation ?

Wow, amazing work all round!
Not even going to try guessing what kit has been used, but hugely enjoyed listening to all of the tracks. Even if my current monitoring doesn't go low enough to do justice to track 4
I was really disappointed to run out of time for this one.
Dave, I really think you need to start providing some sort of official permission slips for these things:
Dear (employer / significant other / source of commitments)
Please excuse (name) from his/her duties for a period of not less than 12 hours, as he/she has a very important piece of music to write for an informal forum competition that doesn't mean a great deal but is generally good fun.
Sincerely
HRH the Queen (I feel that her name carries slightly more weight than yours ;) )

I know less about synths than I do about most things so not going to attempt any guesses but I am about halfway through the playlist so far and thoroughly enjoying it.

Re: One Synth Challenge III - This time it's personal
Here are my initial thoughts from earlier this afternoon:
1 - Anologue. DSI instrument? Prophet 08?
2 - VA.
3 - Analogue. Oberheim?
4 - Digital. Korg?
5 - Plugin.
6 - Digital. Virus?
7 - Digital.
8 - VA. Roland?
9 - Digital. Korg?
10 - Analogue.
11 - FM. Dexed?
12 - Analogue. Moog? Multitracked for poly.
13 - Analogue.
14 - Digital. Korg?
I won't even attempt to go into more detail than that as I'm sure most are not even close!!
I haven't listened to them since this morning so I'm sure my thoughts will change tomorrow when I give them all a good listen again

Thinking about the sound a little more, it could actually be Phase distortion - might change my guess to CZ101. ;)

One person has correctly guessed that my track is from a VA synth.

Track 3? If so, it's a very good VA :)
Of all the guesses, most have got mine right in terms of VA/Digital/Analogue and also the correct manufacturer has been mentioned. Just the wrong model (the synth I did it on is over 20 years old).

Re: One Synth Challenge III - This time it's personal
I've just listened to the whole lot, not a clue who or what (but in my defence, I am a lead guitarist  ). What strikes me is the polish apparent in all the tracks, it is simply mind boggling. IMO there is not a weak track on there but I do have a clear favourite which is track 5 and an honourable mention, Track 10.
I will listen again tomorrow, and again before I try to move on with my efforts, I just wish it was a 'One Guitar Challenge", maybe I'd be in with a chance then.......
Well done everybody

In that case Eddy I’m going to guess and say your track is number 9 and is a Korg Trinity.
Richie I’m guessing you’re track is number 2. Roland JP800?
I now think 5 is some sort of (Yamaha maybe?) workstation. Motif? Maybe a Roland Phantom?
Not sure what I was thinking on track 8 before :headbang: I reckon digital workstation of some sort. Kurzweil? Dave B is that you?

Could be right. I've been able to get very close to this sort of sound with a synth that does both.Jumpeyspyder wrote:Folderol wrote:Interesting. We all seem to be zeroing in on 11 - would be funny if we are all wrong

Talking about 'close', two people are very close with mine - but I won't say how close yet

Not track 2 or 3 and not a JP either, although I do own a JP8080 and was considering using that this time.
Track 8 isn't a Kurzweil ;)

4 people (including myself) have guessed the correct technology of my synth - well, one was mostly right, and I didn't guess  ;)
Also my previous guess of ‘JP 800’ should of course have read ‘JP 8000’ :headbang:
