Budget hollow body guitar I can hang p90s on?

Postby IvanSC » Thu Feb 14, 2019 8:39 pm

Ive been looking at the lower end of o body archtops suitable for rockabilly/swamp rock fopr some time & arrived at the conclusion that I should maybe pick up an archtop with no electrics & roll my own. Any thoughts, all you DIY luthiers?

Godin 5th Ave maybe but what about this one https://www.thomann.de/gb/the_loar_lh_306t_cor.htm
I have an F style mandolin by the same maker and it is excellent.

Easy enough to carve a P90 shaped hole in and cheap enough not to worry over if it goes south. And hella fun to play.

Take my advice, I'm not using it.

So how much beyond your normal budget of zero are you prepared to spend, Ivan? The 335 not twangy enough?

The 5th Avenue Kingpin2 is a great guitar, with nice P90s. It reminds me very much of an old Gibson ES125.

How about coming at it from a different angle...

If a slim line would suffice, there are always bargains to be had secondhand with Aria TA series semis. And there are quite a few companies who put P90's in humbucker size packages. No cutting or routing required, just a pick-up swap.

Just note that Ivan hasn't mentioned P90s.

I'd have thought he'd be looking at Gretsch style guitars and pickups. There's always the Gretsch Streamliner range, or a used Electromatic.

Emi's 330? I'm sure he'd be happy to lend it to you if you can't afford to buy it.

Yes the Casino! It's the only hollow body in epiphone catalog with P90's. The others are semi's I believe...
A Gary Clark Jr Casino with Bigsby just passed by my place with his owner over Christmas. I would go for that one if I was in the market for a budget hollow body...

Zen beat me to it but the Aria TA is a good 335 copy, I've had one for ages and it's a solid guitar for the money.

P90 size hums would fit in nicely, or maybe add some decent wood surrounds to reduce the mount width. I think AllParts did some nice sets at one point.

Knowing Ivan, he's going to be after something pretty specific, so we'll need to wait until he's around again and can spend some time conversing.

My havent you lot been busy! I have been (and still am) ill. Just starting to come out o fit as the prescribed meds start kicking in and... I got bloody GOUT!!!

FWIW I love my ES335 especially now I can play it through my Fishman Loudbox Artist amp! A match made in heaven.
But I have a yen for something with a deeper hollow body & one or two P90s. Getting even deeper into bayou territory these days and there are some things I cant do on any of the fender-y guitars or the Gibson. I did have a look at the Godin with 2 P90s but cant find a decent used one. Nick Barraclough has a rather fine ES225, which is what got me started on this particular quest. Trying hard not to lumber myself with a lot of work that I am ill suited to with one of those pitbull kits...

They're not particularly tricky (i made one after all), but they are pretty time consuming. But i guess you know that already. :)
