VSTs - old favourites

Postby BJG145 » Sun Feb 17, 2019 6:02 pm

...yeah, it's another VST thread, but who doesn't love VSTs... ;)

I thought I'd have a go at Kaiser Chiefs Oh My God for a jam night tomorrow, and reached for Stylus RMX to quickly get something going on drums to practice against. Within about 30 seconds I'd dialled up a preset called "Goin On 3" at 90BPM, and it's perfect.

Just made me wonder what old plugins you use that have served you well, and are still in your go-to list years later.

(PS That piano riff at the start is a bit tricksy, but I think it's something like this...slow, then with Stylus. That's what they're getting tomorrow anyway.)

When I got my focusrite scarlett (maybe 10 years ago?) it came with a few bundle VSTs, I never got on with the EQ, the reverb or whatever the other one was, but the compressor I use on pretty much every track.

A few actually, but the most remarkable must be the humble Sonitus FX Gate. Came stock with the first version of Sonar I got (and it was already prehistoric then) and it just does the job in two seconds every time I need it. I also have the FabFilter gate available but I find the little old Sonitus to be so much easier to dial exactly how I need it.

The one I still miss most is TubeBaby. It was a simple, humble little plug, but it had magic. It was left behind by 64-bit...

Are those the Focusrite Red plugins? I got those free from Beat magazine and haven't really used them.

The Scarlett rather than the Red, though i have no idea what difference there is under the hood.
I just find it very easy to work with.

Korg M1 and Wavestation I still use every so often. And BootEQ equaliser is an oldie but goodie.

I really wanted to buy SaxLab by Linplug but its gone completely now :( great sounding Sax plugin.

Same here - I created several signature banks for the hardware M1 in particular (which I still have in my studio) but the VST versions just sound better, and I'm a sucker for using my own sounds ;)
