...hmm, yeah, I'm glad they've finally made this gift after being asked for it. But I'm not impressed that they put The Verve through it in the first place.

(Claiming a songwriting credit for a few seconds of an orchestral instrumental recorded as a cover of one of their songs...when they'd already okayed a fractionally shorter sample...really...?)

To be fair, It wasn't the Stones who created the issue, it was the record company.

...as a final blow to Ashcroft, when the song was nominated in 1999 for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song, the credited composers were only Mick Jagger and Keith Richards...

I expect they were aware of that, and could have done something about it before now.

I dunno. It does sound like Mick and Keith were well disposed towards Ashcroft, and that he doesn't bear them ill will. All the same, you can't just blame everything on your lawyer.

I read somewhere that it was their string arranger who effectively composed that section.
