No more album chart climbing to hit No.1

Postby Wonks » Sun Aug 25, 2019 9:47 am

Just read in the New Scientist (no source cited) that unless an album hits No.1 in its first week, it will now never get to that position. The days of an album rising through the charts to reach No.1 are now gone.

Gut feel would suggest that it's because overall album sales are now so low that the initial launch push is a) all that's needed to hit number one and b) all the label is willing to fund.
I also have no source to cite! ;)

Previously, bands would release an album then tour to promote it, and sales would increase as word of mouth and reviews got out. Now I guess that all the effort is before the album is released, and as the majority of people now prefer to buy (or obtain) single tracks rather than albums, then that first week is when all the big sales occur.

Of course there will still be sales of individual tracks from that album which will probably far outweigh the album sales.
