Gating/Auto-Splicing: An optical system for digital audio...?

For everything after the recording stage: hardware/software and how you use it.

I find the most 'transparent' way to gate is to process the side-chain signal to emphasise events you wish to trigger it. And either nudge the side-chain signal forward in time or use look ahead, for slightly early triggering/less aggressive attacks.

Alternatively, strip silence, but with a pre/post offset to the cut that allows you then to select all and apply suitable fades. Though if you want to manipulate the 'side-chain' trigger for that process it can get more fiddly.

You still have to listen to each edit, though...

Yes! It requires the human touch (the first set of ears) because it's humans that have to listen to it.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try more tweaking of the gate settings. Speaking of gates and samples...

I would like to hear his vinyl rant.

Only patrons can access this, and Chris had some trouble with his first rant, as his YouTube file got removed by YT forces because it featured short snippets of Beatles tracks :headbang:

However, to give you a flavour here's part of the synopsis for his second 'rant':

"This will be a colossally arrogant podcast. My only excuse here is that I didn’t do these records. I’ve learned as much as I can about them, and I’m here to explain what makes them so amazing and why they’ve survived my whole lifetime while newer, more heavily marketed records fade and die. I’m going to ignore much about lyrics and melodies and focus on the SOUND of the records, and you’ll probably find many of the sounds strange (especially if you’re listening on laptops… or earbuds… really, a horrifying amount of modern music playback technology won’t be your friend here)."

You can certainly use gates if you like, but doing it in the DAW is imho so much better as control goes that it's worth the 15m job.

I liked (the demo of) Zynaptiq's Unveil and when used in combination with a gate. As a de-reverber, Unveil's 0/1 facility allows you to render (bounce) both the 'dried' signal and 'pure' reverb as separate tracks and mix them to taste later.
