Podcasting article or mini-series?

Postby Wonks » Thu Jan 23, 2020 11:50 am

I notice that we've had a lot of forum queries about podcasting. SOS has this feature, https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques ... n-podcasts but it's from back in 2006 and things (and products) have moved on a bit from then. Maybe time for a new article or mini-series? Then it would be easy to direct people to the article(s).

We've just started doing these at work and they're going down really well, so if demand has reached the staid world of financial services it's clearly got a hold! :)

Lots of adverts for financial podcasts seem to pop up on my Twitter timeline. Some show the podcasting setup and some of these companies seem to have invested plenty of money in it. However, I did point out to one company that a cheap little mic in the middle of the table doesn't do much for their company image.

We did an experiment for our first one and recorded the discussion three different ways simultaneously. We had an H4n in the middle of the table, a semi-decent omni in the middle of the table and then some cheap dynamics as close mics.
Given the untreated room and the noise of the air-con etc it's no surprise that the cheap close mics gave a far, far better result. So we went down that route.
I know another company went the other way and invested in treating some rooms at their office sites so they just stick a USB mic on the table and can get a decent recording that way.
I think they were planning to try a couple of mobile studios by proofing and treating a van (whatever the american equivalent of a box-back transit is), but I don't know how they got on with that.

The most impressive picture that I saw had each contributor using what looked like an Audio Technica LDC on a boom arm. There were around half a dozen contributors.

You could hang them down from the ceiling on two bits of string held up by drawing pins. Or have I just given away your secret method?

Two bits of string is definitely phase II.
For now we just have one, slowly-unravelling bit of string; so we have to walk round in circles as the mic gently spins. At least we do that until the cable has coiled up, then we walk round the other way for a bit as it uncoils...

The 'Rotoaural' sound technique. You read it here first, folks.
