Budget Monitors - Yamaha HS5 or Adam Audio T5V?

Postby BassFacer67 » Thu Apr 02, 2020 4:27 am

I am in the market for budget monitors for my apartment recording space. I am recording instrumental music, not electronic. I've narrowed it down to these options. What would you guys choose? I don't plan to buy a sub right now, but maybe down the line if it's needed.

I don't know either of them - but the Yamaha has better room controls on the back than the Adam.

If against a wall you need to reduce the bass to compensate for the rise in bass caused by the wall - and the Yamaha looks better in this respect from looking at the controls on the back of each monitor.

Just a suggestion, but I would look at the Presonus Eris series, this is all down to personal choice, as you must know, but the Eris is a very good speaker for the money.

I know you've asked several questions about setting-up a recording space so forgive me if I'm going over old ground...

If your space has no acoustic treatment then your monitor speakers are not operating in the best of conditions and the sound hitting your ears will almost certainly have been shaped by the room acoustics. So be careful of making mix judgments just based on your speakers.

That said, I'd be checking-out the iLoud Micro Monitors - if the budget allows... :)

I tried both of these and bought the T5V which was slightly less "tubby" than the Yamahas, which were also nice. I tend to work with acoustic instruments (utility band recordings and demos) and I've found the T5Vs to be nicely detailed and revealing. My room is appropriately furnished rather than acoustically treated.

Do yourself a favour, wear earplugs at gigs.
