If you're putting together a studio, you want to spend your money on cool stuff: valve microphones, vintage synths, stupidly loud speakers that will pin your listeners against the rear wall, that sort of thing. But what do you actually need to make your studio work? Boring things!

In this video, SOS Editor In Chief Sam Inglis counts down his unsung heroes, the Top 10 items that won't make your heart beat faster — but will prove vital in the heat of a session.

What's in your Top 10? Let us know in this topic.

Totally agree -- loved this! Sam's deadpan is unbeatable! :)

Must try harder.

"Dancing Queen - feel the heat from the tangerine, ooh yeah!"

Do yourself a favour, wear earplugs at gigs.

I took delivery of a really boring but important thing today actually. A powered USB hub with 10 slots as opposed to the one with 7 that I've been using to date.

I know, it's hard to, but do contain your excitement. Additional boring things in my case are:

  • a handheld label maker
  • an assortment of audio adaptors (rarely used, but very useful when you need to)
  • wire strippers, fine wire snippers, a couple of small screwdrivers, a soldering iron and some solder
  • a continuity tester
  • a pen and a notebook
  • a tape measure
  • dust covers

I think I'll go lie down now

Am I the only one reminded of Holly from Red Dwarf by Mr Sam’s delivery?

I have a magnifying glass near the tape measure as the ol' eyes may still be blue but in other regards they aren't what they were.

Magnificent!

I was hooked at #9, I've been thinking a while on making a video about how a headphone extension cable is a critical tool for the do-it-yourself musician and seeing it mentioned by Sam almost moved me to tears!

Abso-bl*ddy-lutely brilliant - and Sam remains 100% in deadpan character throughout

But at the same time SO thought-provoking

I'm pleased to report that I'd already made up headphone extension cables, have at least one DI box, a comfortable chair, but am woefully short of storage space.

One of the essentials on my list (I mentioned this in SOS many years ago, and have been complimented on it many times since) is a bland computer screensaver that you can launch while listening to your in-progress mixes, rather than getting locked into watching the notes fly by and forgetting about the overall picture.

My favourite going back to WIndows XP has always been the humble Starfield:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDaJzUvAymk

You don't get this on more recent Windows OS' such as 7 or 10, but if you still have a machine running Windows XP you can copy the file named SSSTARS.SCR to retrieve it for posterity - more details here: https://www.starmessagesoftware.com/moo ... creensaver

EDIT: When in place, you can drag the ssstars.scr file from WIndows Explorer to your STart menu, so you can launch it quickly whenever required.

Now there's an idea for an add-on business: SOS StoreHouse (TM) !

Set up a few warehouses around the UK, and house your storage boxes, unwanted gear you can't bear to throw away... special mates-rates for SOS subscribers... Hmm, one to ponder.

I was struck by his introduction, is he an Ingles or an Inglis? I’ve listened to it twice now and each time I hear Ingles. Is this a Bucket/Bouquet thing
Sorry if I’ve hit a raw nerve. :D

I ended up making friends with my local Storage King... Wonderful! All the bulky and rarely used stuff lives in this remote man cave where it's safe, warm, dry and easily accessible 24/7.

And I've got 16U of drawers in the racks for storing odds and ends, a load of cable hangers on the walls, And a stack of Really Useful Boxes for all the other assorted detritus of a working studio!

Yep, turns out I've been mispronouncing his name for years :(
