How do I listen to my synths over headphones

Postby pancake_lizard » Wed Jun 03, 2020 2:42 am

Hi I have a tb 03 a tr 08 and a volca fm.

I have the tr 08 as master and next the 03 is it’s slave and than I have the volca fm last all daisy chained over midi.

I just want to listen to everything at the same time over headphones in my case earbuds but I don’t know how or where to connect everything to get everything as one output. This seems like a trivial problem but I cannot figure things out

Thanks for the help.

The key lesson to learn here is that MIDI and Audio are completely separate.

You can link devices using MIDI to synchronise them or play them all from a keyboard/sequencer/DAW. But there is no audio involved.

Each of your devices has one or more sets of audio outputs (a mono or stereo main output and a mono or stereo headphone output). To listen to them all at the same time you need to send them to an audio mixer of some sort. That could be a a mixing desk, or it could be a multiple input audio interface to a computer DAW. The simplest option would be a simple mixing desk where you could the 3 stereo or mono inputs and connect your earbuds to the headphone output to listen to your mix.

Yep, a cheap mixer like this would do

Also there is a video called “How mixers work” on that page you should watch.

All my units utilize 1/8 inch cables instead of 1/4 inch is there a good mixer that has both?

Thanks

Adapters are cheap.

Indeed and, the back of that Roland at least seems to sport 1/4" TRS stereo outputs?

As with all things 'connectorbabble' OP will have to look, learn, ask and then buy the right bits.

Please don’t use 1/8 plug to 1/4 inch socket adapters, they are very unreliable, and the weight of the 1/4 socket makes for undue strain on the equipment socket.

There are plenty of adaptor cables online, (here is an example) or you can make your own if you are handy with a soldering iron.

Just buy a lead with 1/4 inch jack at one end and 1/8 at the other...no need for adaptors if you buy the right lead!

I was thinking of the other way around... didn’t even think of that! Gotta be careful of what I suggest to newbies. Anyhow, an adapter cable is the way to go, as has been pointed out.

Korg have a Volca Mixer specifically for this purpose , less than £100 from some retailers, might provide some interesting options for your set up too as is more than just an audio mixer .

Do check compatibility with you non-Korg kit though.
