There's an HD 25 Light which is indeed a cut down version.

I'm thinking the sensible option is to buy the 25s, and hold on to the old ones for spares.

It was John Willett, actually, and we archived that information into the Useful Information Archive Forum:

https://www.soundonsound.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=61870

Specifically, JW listed these versions:

HD 25-1 II - 70Ω - 1.5m steel cable with rt.angled connector.

HD 25 II - 70Ω - 2m steel cable with straight connector.

HD 25-C II - 70Ω - 2/3m coiled copper cable with straight connector.

HD 25-13 II - 600Ω - 3m steel cable with straight connector.

All the above have the split headband and single-sided cable.

The one below has a cheap headband and a double-sided "Y" cable and lower quality downrated capsules:

HD 25-SP II - 90Ω - 3m steel cable with straight connector.

I don't think Sennheiser are helping their customers with such confusing identifying names... but the basic rule is: avoid the SP version!

Looks like they've simplified the range now to the HD25, HD25 Plus (which are the same) and the Light which has a reduced specification, all are 70Ω - a search for HD25 on the website only brings up those three (plus umpteen accessories and spares)

Hi there,

First up apologies Richard I hope this is not hijacking your thread (well it is kind of but hope you don't mind as I think you have resolution and goodness knows we don't need another thread!).

I have been looking for new headphones also as having real difficulty judging the dreaded low end of mixes. The San offer on the 702's seems too good to miss out on and as I tend to mix with a partner I would need two pairs.

Currently using the AKG 240s phones I purchased years ago when first getting into all this stuff. They are really comfortable but just not quite doing it for bass (the gener is electronic so deep 808 kicks and low frequency synth lines are a thing).

From other threads I see the 712's do have more bass extension but consensus seems to say that the 702's are more than capable. Is there any reason not to pull the trigger on the Sacn offer?

Cheers as always,

I have both here. The 702s *are* more than capable.

There are HD25 light which are different (dunno in what way) but the normal HD25 and HD25 plus are indeed the same units with the plus having a coiled cable, spare ear pads and a soft case....otherwise the same actual headphones.

Outlined here: (at bottom of linked page there is a HD 25 comparison)

And just looked, Sennheiser's flat rate repair fee is £66.

That's not a bad price for headphones that sold for over £200 - and they do everything for that price - so, unless you replaced them recently, I would suggest getting the earpads and/or headband pads done as well.

But they can be bought new now for only £88
https://www.thomann.de/gb/sennheiser_hd ... ImVuIn0%3D

So not really a great price for a repair anymore (75% of the new price)

88 quid is a bloody bargain though!

:o They were over £200 when I bought mine over 30 years ago :o

But £88 is high - Sennheiser are doing them for £87 - but ONLY if bought this month.

I've just received my replacement HD25s. It's a limited edition - the ear pads are yellow!!

Fortunately, they came with spare black ear pads.

The most comfortable (and long lasting) are the velour pads. They last two to three times as long and don't peel like the leatherette ones do after a while.

You only need to change the velour ones when the internal foam is turning to dust.

I swapped over to the velour ones years ago.
