Hi,

I am looking to buy a replacement power supply for a Samson S-Amp as my current one is broken. I would like this specific power supply because I’ve tried a few other options and they added a noticeable amount of noise. This particular model had the least amount of noise.

In my experience all those wall rat supplies put out a certain amount of RF hash because they are 'Switch Mode Power Supplies' and there is bound to be some unless they are very expensive and totally enclosed in a metal can.

The onus for noise suppression is therefore really on the designer of the amplifier/pedal/di-da being powered.

Two suggestions,
Go for a higher current rating. 3A or more.
Buy some ferfte RFI absorbers and wrap the DC cable round them.

Yes I tried a couple of power supplies and they introduced a fair amount of noise but this one was much quieter than the others which is why I’d like to get this specific model.

Yes, I understood that (why can't you keep the one you tried?) I just wanted to say that it is the equipment that lacks the filtering rather than the supplies. I assume they are SUPPOSED to meet certain emission standards?
If you bought an 18V 3A supply from a reputable source, RS Comps, CPC say and found it noisy you should have some comeback? Mind you, 'they' might say "the supply meets current emission standards" which would again throw the issue back to the amplifier.

I have had some first hand experience of this trying to select a PSU to go with a new pedal range. "OUR" pedal was fine with all of them but not some other pedal makes.

That looks a decent supply and there is a detailed specification. The power plug might not fit but adaptors are commonly available.

No trace using a well-known search engine.

Looks like a generic Chinese adapter to me. Follow Dave's advice, but don't get the cheapest you can find. CPC stock a large range of such adapters at various price points. I've used them for all sorts of stuff over the years; never had any problems.

Or just buy an s-amp with adaptor from Ebay and ask the seller which model of adaptor they have.

I bought my Samson S-Amp brand new and noticed that it was much noisier than one of my colleagues, At first I thought I had a faulty S-Amp but had a quick look at the power supplies and noticed that the spec on his was different to the one that came with mine. I tried his adapter and this cured the noise issue. I contacted Samson and they exchanged the power supply and it has worked great for years but unfortunately the psu got damaged over the weekend.

I've been trying to find a replacement but haven't found anything yet.

Thomann have a few 18V PSU's of at least 1.5A, all for audio devices so should be suitable. Best option would be to look elsewhere for the UK variants and convert/change the DC output jack as necessary.

Hate to be a "told you so" but the direction of this thread seems to support my idea that it is the Sansamp that seriously lacking in filtering and PSRR?

Maybe make a wee box with a couple of ferrite coils and some caps in it?
