I've seen cymbals at all angles from absolutely horizontal to nearly vertical in equal measure. But, as soon as you have a proper stage the drummer is higher than the audience so they are hearing the sound from the underside.

Or, more likely, the PA system. I have never understood the propensity to mic drums in smaller venues...

Even recording drums is seldom done with an appropriately minimalist approach - 3 mics or less - IMHO (drummers will doubtless differ with that statement).

Your forum name led me to think you might favour a minimalist approach, as do I :thumbup:

FWIW I pretty much always mic the kick and guitar cab (and DI the bass) even in pubs. I can always leave the fader down, but I rarely mic the whole kit in a small venue.

I mic our drummer's kick because feeding some of that back in his monitor means he plays quieter. :D
