Strawberry Switchblade - Since Yesterday - What is happening?

Postby Chimera » Wed Jun 03, 2020 3:40 pm

Something of a blast from the past but a song I have found memorable for the strange stereo trickery in the section between 1.30 and 1.40 mins. What on earth is going on?

The effects are just audible on this Youtube vid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7ZNn8VrnBI

The effects are more prominent on iTunes or Spotify.

I had that single!

I don't know offhand, but it's probably some stereo manipulation and delays like the Marshall Time Modulator or something on the gated synth parts.

Just sounds like a keyed gate to me, placed over the whole mix.

Yeah, it's not the gate we're talking about - it does a stereo thing - listen on headphones. It's subtle, but quite nice.

In fairness, I asked you when you were at mine a year or so ago and you gave the same answer. Strangely enough the wife cannot hear the effect too.

Hmmm... I think it's just the normal stereo movement (chorus, etc) in the mix that seems to jump around due to the disorientating gating. But if you guys are hearing something else it's not something I'm getting!

I think Desmond's suggestion of the Marshall Time effect might be right. I checked out a YT demo and it has the same queasiness inducing quality. Just downloaded the Soundtoys 5 demo as the Tremolator and PhaseMistress should do the same trick. $499 for plugins that make you feel green around the gills. Not a bargain!!

I agree with this answer entirely. The stereo movement is from the keyboards. Listen to the hi-hat which stays stable. Don't over-complicate it.
This is 1985; we were all doing the triggered gate thing back then. Some of us didn't have much else!! :)

Oh, and boy could those vocals do with some tuning, unless that's the 'charm' of it?

There's definitely a delay/phasing effect going on which is subtly manipulating the stereo image to widen the synths. it is subtle, but it's pretty clearly audible to me. Combined with the stereo layering of the keyboards, it's probably used to widen the stereo image with a modulating delay with a small delay time (much like the commonly used widening trick of offsetting one side by a few samples).

You can hear the movement more clearly if you monitor just the "side" signal on that part - you can hear the modulation shifting going on with whatever delay/phase effect they were using.

innerchord wrote:This is 1985; we were all doing the triggered gate thing back then.

Yes, we all know what triggered gating is, but this is not what we are talking about. But the effect *is* on the keyboards/gated part. It's the stereo movement we are talking about, and it's subtle, but it's definitely there, and is more of a feature of that section where there's less going on.

innerchord wrote:Oh, and boy could those vocals do with some tuning, unless that's the 'charm' of it?

Sure. It's not the only record with vocals that weren't super in tune. This is the early 80s - it was the norm! (Plus I kind of think it's not really fair to judge old stuff by today's standards... *Compare* maybe, but not judge...)

I'll place a good bet that's Dimension D on the synth pad.

Possibly, yep. My brain is telling me I've seen somewhere an article about those recording sessions, but I looked and I can't turn it up... But then my brain is also telling me to make a cup of tea, and I've just had one, so... :headbang:
