Acustica introduce Dangerous Music BAX EQ Plugin

Classic EQ design goes virtual

Dangerous Music BAX EQ Plugin Baxandall

Following on from the launch of the 500-series version of their BAX EQ unit, Dangerous Music have now teamed up with modelling experts Acustica Audio to create an officially licensed plug-in. Simply named the Dangerous Music BAX EQ Plugin, the new arrival is said to closely replicate the sound of its praised hardware counterpart, and has been with direct involvement from mastering designer Chris Muth and the Dangerous Music team themselves.

Development of the plug-in began with the company handing over a BAX EQ production unit to the software team at Acustica. Chris Muth and Dangerous Music’s President Marek Stycos evaluated the software against their own units, assessing the measurable differences in the responses and filter behaviours.

Across four major revisions of the plug-in’s design, Dangerous Music supplied a second production hardware unit, reviewed measurement plots and sent their own Convert-AD+ and Convert-2 converters to the development team for impulse-response capture. The refinement process continued until the original hardware team were satisfied that the plug-in accurately matched the sound of the hardware. The result is a recreation that faithfully emulates the sound of the BAX EQ, but also introduces some additional features that aren’t present on the physical version, including a Mid-Side mode in addition to dual-mono and stereo operation.

Key Features

  • Certified By Dangerous: The only BAX EQ plug-in certified by Dangerous Music, forged by the original designers.
  • Chris Muth Circuitry: Designed by a mastering virtuoso, with classic tone controls.
  • Phase-Coherent Cut Filters: Musically remove competing frequencies so the mix falls together naturally.
  • Low Cut: Clear infrasonic rumble to reclaim headroom, punch and low-end clarity.
  • High Cut: Tame ultrasonic noise for a bright, airy top that’s never harsh.
  • Three Views: Classic, Expanded and Dual Mono views.
  • Mid-Side Processing: Shape centre and sides independently — beyond the original hardware.

  • Output Control: A final output knob for gain staging.
