The latest plug-in release from Sheffield-based fedDSP aims to offer an all-in-one solution for users in search of more low-end weight and character. Built on years of experimentation, bigBASS packs in an array of tools designed to enhance low-frequency content, and is said to be versatile enough to tackle everything from subtle mix-bus duties to huge-sounding kicks and basses.
First up is a Reso control that’s been designed to deliver clean, focused bass sounds, and it’s joined by Grit, which focuses on the other end of the scale, adding additional harmonics that are particularly useful in helping the low-end translate to smaller playback systems. A Drive control then introduces some saturation that’s been fine-tuned to make the low end feel ‘thicker’ and more exciting.
Despite the focus on bass, the plug-in also includes a Hi section kitted out with tools for adding some presence and harmonic movement up at the top end. The controls can be used for rebalancing following a large bass boost, or can be put to work independently to enhance midrange and high-frequency content. The company have also included some handy extras, including a Headroom control that interacts with the Input and Output controls and makes quick work of gain staging, a global Mix control and a built-in limiter.
