Boss’ PX-1 Plugout Pedal offers an innovative approach to guitar pedals, providing users with a hardware stompbox that’s capable of hosting authentic recreations of historic Boss pedals. It comes pre-loaded with a selection of iconic effects, and more can be added using Model Passes, a paid-for add-on that can be accessed using the company’s Boss Effect Loader app.
A selection of effects have been added since the platform’s launch, and the latest update brings three new praised Boss pedals to the table: the PW-2 Power Driver, the XT-2 Xtortion and the CS-2 Compression Sustainer.
PW-2 Power Driver
The PW-2 delivers gritty, rough-grained distortion that is said to work in a wide variety of musical settings. It can be combined with a high‑gain amp to produce a ‘wall of sound’, or used alongside a lower-gain setup for a more refined crunch tone. Users are advised to start with the Fat and Muscle controls at minimum, and gradually raise them to dial in the desired low- and mid-frequency character.
XT-2 Xtortion
The XT-2 has been designed for bold distortion sounds and maximum tone shaping. Even with the cleanest amps, it produces thick, solid gain with a commanding presence. Contour and Punch controls offer a huge range of midrange control, delivering everything from massive-sounding tones with scooped mids to focused sounds that cut through a mix.
CS-2 Compression Sustainer
While the CS-1 used an optical detector circuit, the next-generation CS-2 instead employed a VCA that offered a faster response time. The compression is more versatile, and is enhanced by subtle distortion in the VCA circuitry that adds some natural richness and character.
