The latest multi-effects pedal from Boss is a compact unit that promises to give any pedalboard a “massive boost in sonic versatility”. The EX-4 Effects Expander comes loaded with a huge collection of classic Boss effects, and is said to be the ideal solution for anybody who needs a rig that’s capable of covering many styles.
The EX-4 comes loaded with a collection of 120 effects, and is capable of running up to four of them simultaneously. The onboard library includes a wide range of the company’s classic overdrives and distortions, along with modulation, delay, reverb — there’s also a set of bass-tuned effects and unique Boss favourites like Slow Gear and Slicer. Dedicated utility blocks allow users to insert foot volume, noise suppressors, send/return and divider/mixer modules anywhere in the signal chain, and the pedal also includes a global EQ for overall tone shaping.
A 2.4-inch full-colour display provides a clear overview of the signal chain, displaying individual effect blocks, editing options, menus and more. Four dedicated, colour-coded FX buttons allow users to turn effect blocks on/off with a single press, while parameter editing can be accessed with a long press. The EX-4 is equipped with rugged dual-function footswitches that can be on a system-wide or per-memory basis, and can be assigned to a variety of functions including effect block on/off, memory up/down, master bypass, tap tempo and more. Helpfully, the footswitches are accompanied by an colour LED that indicates their assigned function.
As for connectivity, a set of four quarter-inch TS sockets provide mono or stereo connectivity, and it’s possible to use two as an effects loop to place external pedals anywhere within the EX-4's effect chain. Two footswitches or an expression pedal can be connected for more control, while integration with other MIDI pedals, switching systems and external clocking devices is provided by TRS MIDI connectivity.
