Deity Microphones will soon be launching a new 32-bit six-track recorder that’s been designed with production sound duties in mind. The PR-4 delivers an array of pro-level features in an enclosure that’s compact enough to suit both on-camera mounting traditional ‘sound bag’ use.
Equipped with four inputs and six tracks, the PR-4 has been designed to tackle a wide range of real-world scenarios. It employs 32-bit floating-point converters and features a pair of Deity’s ReGain preamps, which offer up to +60dB of gain and boast an Equivalent Input Noise measurement of -127 dBV (-125 dBu). There’s also a VoiceAware Automix feature that automatically adjusts channel levels, prioritising voices while reducing unwanted signals present in any inactive channels.
As for connectivity, the first two channels offer XLR/TRS combo inputs, while channels 3 and 4 are presented on a 3.5mm mini-jack connector. As for outputs, the unit is kitted out with two stereo outputs, a headphone output and Timecode I/O, all of which are offered on 3.5mm mini-jacks.
Dual recording functionality means that the PR-4 can record simultaneously to an internal 64GB SSD and an SD Card (capacities up to 1TB are supported), providing protection against failing storage — or somebody accidentally formatting a drive or card! Helpfully, the unit allows different signals to be recorded to each storage device if required.
The PR-4 includes a internal NP-F550 battery bay that can be recharged via USB-C port, and the device can be powered directly from its USB-C port if required. For those looking to integrate the PR-4 into a bigger setup, there is a four-pin Push Pull Power port that is compatible with the company’s SPD-1 and SPD-Mini, or can be fed direct power form the S-95 using the SPD-HRBatt. It can also be used to recharge the internal L-series battery.
Key Features
- World’s Smallest Six-Track Recorder: Compact ENG-ready form factor with full pro routing and six-track recording capability.
- Dual Media Recording (SD + Internal SSD): Simultaneous backup recording eliminates risk from card failure or accidental data loss.
- ReGain Preamp (Dual ADC, +60 dB Gain): Ultra-clean gain structure with industry-leading EIN performance, capable of driving demanding dynamic mics.
- Wireless Timecode Master: First recorder to natively transmit timecode to TC slates and TC boxes, turning the recorder into a centralised sync hub.
- VoiceAware Automix: Intelligent real-time mixing that prioritises active speakers and delivers a clean stereo reference for post.
- Over Eight Hours of Battery Life: Runs on a single NP-F550 lithium pack; fully rechargeable via USB-C.
“The PR-4 represents a shift in what creators should expect from compact audio recorders; this isn’t a handheld recorder being repurposed for video. The inspiration came from analog ENG-style field mixers where everything was compact and self-contained. We focused on the jobs people do every day — interviews, small crews, run-and-gun setups — and we built a recorder that fits naturally into those workflows.” - Andrew Jones, Global Marketing Manager, Deity Microphones
