JZ Microphones have teamed up with Grammy-winning producer and engineer Marc Urselli to develop a new hybrid mic that employs both a ribbon and a large-diaphragm capacitor capsule.
The MU-1 has been created to offer a quicker and simpler solution to the popular approach of combining ribbon and capacitor mics on a single source. It features the Golden Drop capsule found in JZ’s praised Black Hole mic series, which is housed alongside a premium 1.2 µm foil ribbon motor. The mic’s design ensures that the two elements are phase aligned and level matched, meaning that it’s far quicker to set up and adjust positioning than is possible with typical dual-miking approaches.
A single five-pin XLR carries the outputs from both elements, and the MU-1 comes supplied with a breakout cable that splits the two signals out to their own three-pin XLRs.

At JZ, we’re always looking for innovative, practical ways to make engineers’ lives easier — not more complicated. MU-1 is exactly that.
