Based in Sheffield, UK, fedDSP offer a range of plug-ins that span the music production, live sound and high-end media industries. Their latest offering has just been released, delivering a new dual-stage limiter designed to add weight, presence and colour as well as provide detailed control over peaks.
Signals arriving at leONE’s input pass through a number of controls designed to alter the character of the sound before any dynamics processing is applied. Before the limiting stages, users are able to introduce some tube- and transformer-inspired saturation, as well as adding some additional low-end resonances and applying lo-fi effects.
The first of its two limiter stages is named Clamp, and is said to be a versatile processor that offers transparent limiting by default, but comes equipped with a Grit control that can be used to push it into more obvious, ‘characterful’ territory. The second is designed specifically for level protection, and features a fixed ceiling set at just below 0dB.
In its default view, the plug-in offers a simple set of controls: In, Clamp, Out and Release. Switching to leONE’s Advanced panel then reveals an array of more in-depth parameters, including global high-pass and low-pass filters, stereo or dual-mono operation and a Modern/Vintage selector that defines the overall sound character by altering the behaviour of each of the plug-in’s processing stages.
