Physical-modelling experts launch pipe-based instrument

Modartt Airteq physical modelling wind reed pipe sound design instrument

Modartt are well known for their impressive Pianoteq and Organteq offerings, and now, they’ve put their physical modelling expertise to work on a new sound-design instrument that revolves around modelled pipes. Rather than recreating specific instruments, Airteq instead provides users with a collection of virtual pipes, allowing them to create their own custom instruments that offer a mixture of acoustic and electronic qualities.

The company say that the new instrument has been designed for composers, sound designers and musicians looking for “organic movement, evolving acoustic-like atmospheres and entirely new textures while remaining grounded in the underlying physics of air, pipes and resonance”. It’s based on their well-established physical modelling techniques, and also relies on their more recently developed Dynamic Aerophone Modelling (DAM) technology, which turns airflow into a creative parameter, allowing musicians to continuously control, modulate and transform the wind supply of each virtual pipe in real time.

Each of the loaded pipes (it’s possible to combine up to five per patch) feature independent air-supply controls, and there’s a global envelope that offers instrument-wide air control. There are two general-purpose envelopes and three assignable LFOs, along with a set of assignable macro controls, and the instrument offers support for expressive control via aftertouch and MPE. Over 170 factory presets are present, which showcase the instruments capabilities and offer everything from evolving pads and cinematic textures to organic, acoustic sounds.

Compatibility

Airteq is supported on Windows, macOS and Linux systems (no minimum versions specified), and is available as a VST3, AU and AAX plug-in or a standalone application.
