Roland have just launched a new digital piano that integrates with a mobile app in an effort to encourage returning players and hobbyists to get more enjoyment from learning and playing the piano. The FP-40 features built-in Wi-Fi, and connects seamlessly with Piano Sphere, a free app developed by creative learning experts Skoove.
FP-40 Digital Piano
Inspired by the technology in Roland's flagship GP series grand pianos, the FP-40 comes equipped with the company’s Piano Reality Sound Engine, which promises to deliver the depth, detail and tonal character of an acoustic piano. The PHA-4 Standard keyboard boasts a fully weighted hammer action, escapement and Ivory Feel keys, and includes a triple-sensor system which Roland say offers “exceptional responsiveness and natural expression”. A newly designed speaker system then delivers a clear, spacious sound with increased depth and richness in the low register.
Built-in Wi-Fi allows the instrument to connect to its companion app (of which more below), as well as paving the way for new features via future software updates. There’s also onboard Bluetooth that can be used to stream songs and other audio content from a mobile device through the piano’s speaker system allowing pianists to play along.
Piano Sphere App
Designed to accommodate players of every skill level, the new Piano Sphere app is an exclusive companion for the FP-40 that offers immediate, integrated feedback. Developed in collaboration with Skoove, the software employs a learning method designed by professional instructors, and aims to offer a fun approach that encourages users to start with the music they love. It includes 100 licensed and copyright-free songs that span from pop to classical and include just about everything in between, featuring selections by Coldplay, Harry Styles and a whole host of other well-known artists. As their skills grow, users can upgrade the app to access over 1000 songs and lessons.
Piano Sphere creates personalised plans based on skill level, musical taste and desired pace. The FP-40 is capable of detecting when the player is having trouble with a specific section, and the Piano Sphere button will flash to ask if they need assistance. A Streaks feature helps build practise habits to maintain musical momentum, and users can also earn rewards badges for consistency, course completion and more. Additionally, the FP-40 records playing time even when the app is not open, ensuring that progress is always tracked.
Piano Sphere is available as a free download for iOS and Android devices. The app supports multiple languages, including English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, traditional Chinese and simplified Chinese.
