Viiri Audio’s debut plug-in aims to do something a little different with convolution processing, allowing users to adjust all of its impulse-response parameters in real time to create everything from rhythmic effects to pitched, synth-style tones.
Aava allows users to import and layer up to four impulse responses that can be up to 600 seconds long. It’s possible to import existing files or record sources directly into the plug-in — they can be captured from the input, output or side-chain, and it’s even possible to use an IR whilst it’s being recorded. Once the files are loaded into Aava, they can be ‘played’ using two modes of operation: Pitched and Rhythmic. The former can be used to turn drones into pitched instruments, and offers automatic pitch detection and key-tracking, while the latter has been designed to process drum loops or other rhythmic samples. Thanks to an onboard editor, users are able to trim and fade IRs without needing to leave the plug-in.
A wealth of built-in modulation options are present, including an LFO that boasts some unusual waveshapes, a tempo-sync’able sample and hold function, AD and AR envelopes that can be triggered either by audio or MIDI, an envelope follower and a key follower. And as well as being able to modulate just about any of the plug-ins controls, the modulation tools’ own parameters can be modulated too! There’s also a map-style interface that allows plug-in states to be placed as nodes, with users able to blend seamlessly between different parameter settings and sounds using an X-Y interface.
