Wes Audio’s ng product range has come a long way since it was first introduced, and now includes a tasty selection of all-analogue outboard gear that can be controlled, automated and recalled from DAW plug-ins. The latest addition to the line-up has just been revealed, and this time the company are trying their hand at an all-in-one bus processor aimed at mixing and mastering duties.
Analogue Signal Path
The ngOmniBox is built around an all-analogue signal path that combines a passive EQ with a bus compressor, a saturation circuit, a clipper and a stereo-width section. Each processor can be independently bypassed, and it’s possible to reverse the order of the EQ and compressor sections.
First up is an Input section equipped with a level control and high-pass filter, along with an insert point that allows users to integrate additional outboard gear at the start of the signal chain. Two bands of passive EQ follow, offering low and high shelves each with adjustable frequencies. The Bus Comp section then offers continuous control over threshold, make-up gain and dry/wet mix, with a set of buttons providing a choice of attack and release times, ratios and side-chain filter options.
Next, a Saturation section provides the opportunity to dial in some additional harmonic distortion, with a variable Drive control joined by a Mix knob that allows for instant parallel processing. A Clipper section then offers some peak control and transient shaping, and feeds into a Stereo Width section that features a continuous Width control and a variable high-pass filter that allows the low end to be left unaffected. Finally, an Output section provides final level adjustment and a second insert point that can function in left-right or Mid-Side modes.
Digital Recall
As with the rest of its ng-series siblings, the new arrival boasts full digital control and recall. All of the hardware controls are replicated in a plug-in, allowing the unit to be controlled, automated and recalled directly from a DAW session. In addition to the plug-in control, the unit itself includes front-panel A, B and C buttons that make it possible to compare up to three different processing settings.
