    Q. How much gain do I need from a preamp?

Reading the specifications of various mic preamps, I notice that the amount of gain that different models provide seems to vary quite a lot. How much gain do I realistically need for using run-of-the-mill dynamic and condenser mics?

    Q. How should I record a choir?

I have to record a 30-strong mixed choir that will be performing on a small stage in a packed village hall. I have several SM58s and AKG C1000s, but would be willing to invest modestly in alternative mics if necessary. What would you suggest?

    Q. Is it safe to apply phantom power to dynamic mics?

I did a recording session recently using a mixture of dynamic and condenser mics, and realised my desk does not have switchable phantom power for each channel — they're either all on or all off. Luckily, I had some external channel strips which I ran the condensers through, but is it safe to apply phantom power to dynamic mics?

    Q. Do I need to address the gain structure differently in digital and analogue consoles?

I was told by a sound engineer that, when mixing, it is not a good practice to have all the channel volume faders way up and to have the master fader down, and that this applies both to analogue and digital consoles. Is this true?

    Q. Should I believe my meters?

I read that the level meters in most DAWs don't give a true indication of when audio is peaking, and that audio which looks like it's below 0dBFS may actually be peaking above it, causing distortion when played back. Is this true?

    Q. Why is my vocal clipping?

I've been recording vocals using a Neumann TLM103 mic going through a Dbx 386 tube preamp, and using the Dbx's converters to send a digital signal into a Roland VS1680 multitracker. I understood the Dbx was virtually impossible to clip, but experience proves otherwise! What am I doing wrong?
