The five-octave Nord Wave 2 is a Jack of all trades and master of, well, really quite a lot!

Nord's new Wave 2 is a successor to the original Wave, the virtual analogue synth with sample-replay oscillators that was produced from 2007-2013. In many ways the Wave 2 is also a natural development of Clavia's Lead family of synths, and has knocked the Lead 4 out of the Swedish manufacturer's product line-up. It's a virtual analogue instrument still, and as is often the case, any lack of purist analogue authenticity is mitigated by significantly increased polyphony (48 voices) and flexibility in the synth architecture. That includes sophisticated oscillators with virtual analogue, wavetable, FM and sample replay modes, multimode filters, and a four-part/layer sound structure that can be employed flexibly for different tasks.

Can virtual still mean virtuous in 2020? With the new Nord inserted in my own increasingly retro, voltage-controlled studio I was very keen to find out.

Seeing Red

The Wave 2 is a neat and purposeful thing, metal-bodied with grey ends, and bristling with positive-action knobs and buttons familiar from other Nord models. The 'signature' wooden pitch stick and thin mod wheel are there too, amongst a small group of additional performance controls. The two clear white-on-dark OLED screens are good to see, and are a big step up from the often cryptic two-digit LEDs employed for the same purposes in the previous generation of Lead synths.

On the rear panel there's an IEC power inlet (full marks, Nord), a single stereo pair of output sockets next to a headphone out, an 3.5mm audio input, sustain and expression pedal inputs, DIN MIDI In and Out, and a USB Type B port.

The Wave 2's back panel includes connections for USB, MIDI I/O, sustain and control pedals, monitor input, and audio and headphone outputs.

The keyboard is notable for a few reasons. First, it's five octaves long, which is going to be massively preferable for many players to the four of all preceding Nord synths. Second, it adds aftertouch sensitivity, which was such an unfortunate omission on the Lead 4 and A1. Third, it's pretty much a 'waterfall' design with a solid/rounded front and side profile, and has a smooth, shiny finish. White key length is a relatively compact 132mm, the mechanism is semi-weighted and firmly sprung, and the aftertouch response is first-class. It's a huge improvement over the fast but flimsy-feeling Fatar TP/7 used in the Lead A1, and though not as silky as a TP/9 (used by Sequential amongst others) it's as good, in a different way.

Part Play

Where the original Wave was bitimbral, the Wave 2 goes quad. The four layers can underpin complex multi-layer sounds, keyboard splits (with up to three split points and four resulting keyboard 'zones'), or indeed sequencing with one layer per MIDI channel and optional live-played layers on top. It really is like having four separate synths in parallel, with their own completely separate effects sections, combining only to share the single stereo line output.

The front-panel Layer Control section is where it all happens, with dedicated buttons enabling, accessing and soloing layers, and faders controlling volume and pan. There are some nifty options too, like split-point crossfades that can dovetail sound transitions across six or 12 semitones. Keyboard Split points can only lie between E/F or B/C pairs across the bottom four octaves of the keyboard, but on the plus side, are indicated by panel LEDs. Helpfully, layers can also transmit on their own MIDI channels, which makes the Wave 2 into an unexpectedly effective master keyboard, capable of controlling external MIDI modules from a couple of zones, and its own sounds from one more (say). The implementation is rudimentary and lacks dedicated controller niceties, but it's a welcome addition all the same.

The basic unit of patch memory is the Program, and there are 400 slots on board (accessed in 16 banks of 25, all user-writeable). Each contains all the settings for an entire Wave 2 patch: the whole four layers' worth, even if fewer are actually used, which completely does away with distracting distinctions between single-layer and 'multi' memories.

Management by name and category in those nice bright OLEDs is a colossal improvement over recent Nord synths, and there are good options for viewing Programs in list form, in filtered subsets, alphabetically, and with a summary of the contents of their four layers. Nothing is offered in the way of 'seamless transitions', by the way, so calling up a new Program always silences anything that was previously sounding. However, within a Program, layers can be enabled and disabled glitch-free, with robust avoidance of hanging notes and so on, so it's possible to line up four single-part sounds and move between them at will.

Tooth & Claw

To get to the nub of what the Wave 2 is capable of, and how the thing actually sounds, is not a trivial or quick affair. It's something of a chameleon: each layer can use either a virtual analogue, wavetable, 4-operator FM or sample playback sound engine. All are worthy of quite a bit of comment.

Actually, beyond those basic engine choices the design is perfectly conventional. The synth engines output into a six mode filter with its own ADSR envelope, there's a dedicated Amp ADSR, an auxiliary 'Osc Mod' AD/AR envelope, a single global (ie. not per-voice) LFO, and a dedicated vibrato LFO.

We've got to start somewhere, so it might as well be the Analog oscillator mode, which, in many ways, feels fundamental to the whole synth.

Analog

How many oscillators does the Wave 2 have per voice? That's a pertinent question for any new user of this synth, because unlike pretty much any integrated synth since the Minimoog, there's just a single Oscillators section that gives no hint of what lies within.

The simple answer is in fact 'up to three' but the fuller explanation is that this is a 'multimode' oscillator section. Four of the seven Categories (Nord's terminology) give you a single oscillator per voice, while the remainder mimic the sound of multiple oscillators through a sort of macro control scheme.

Starting simple, the Basic category gives you a single-oscillator Sine, Triangle, Saw, Square or Pulse (in 33 percent or 10 percent widths). Shape does pulse-width and/or shape variations of many of the same, along with interesting Half-Sine and Parabolic waves. Shape Sine morphs a sawtooth, square, pulse and several other harmonically interesting starting points back and forth from a sine, which is more aurally interesting than it might at first sound. And the last single-oscillator offering is Misc, gathering together White, Pink and Red noise with a Bell that has a sine fundamental alongside a stretchable inharmonic overtone series. At all times the OLED display in the Oscillator section gives a graphical indication of waveshape, updating in real time when changes happen. And this proves just as helpful for the multi-oscillator categories as it does for the singles.

In Sync the Osc Ctrl knob dials in a characteristic hard sync sound which in a conventional design, of course, would require two oscillators correctly configured in a leader/follower relationship. Notable waveforms here are two 'Chop' Saws and a Chop Square that generate buzzy talkbox and formant-like resonances.

The last two waveform Categories, Multi and Super, offer up detunable double and triple saws in various octave and fifth spacings (very Minimoog-esque), and versions of the heavily phased/chorused JP8000-style 'supersaw', with square wave and organ spectra variants.

Viewed as a whole, this is a seriously potent collection of analogue-style starting points, and the three-encoder interface for exploring them is genuinely easy and quick to use.

If you're thinking that a swathe of simple but useful two-oscillator combos are not available, though — slightly detuned unisons, for instance, or a square with a sine sub-bass maybe — you'd be right. They're achievable in other ways: for doubling and thickening you could use the good three-way unison effect (which doesn't steal polyphony), or utilise the multi-layer architecture to run detuned or transposed single-oscillator sounds on two layers. That could sound like a faff but it turns out it doesn't have to be: one layer can be quickly copied to others, and any number of layers grouped so that parameter tweaks made on one apply instantly to others. Still, it will require a small but significant shift of mindset until you're used to the concept.

It's also interesting to reflect that the two fruitful dual-oscillator combinations I mentioned are available on the Lead A1 within a single layer. It would be nice to see Nord reinstating these additional combo categories in a future Wave 2 update, especially for users trying to squeeze the very most out of their layers.

Samples

Equally as accessible as the virtual analogue waveforms, in the Oscillators section, is a sample playback mode.

The Wave 2 is not by itself a sampler — it doesn't have a suitable audio input, nor any on-board editing facilities — but the 1GB sample memory is user-configurable using a Windows/Mac OS Nord Sample Editor application: find out more about it in the 'Apps' box.

The headline features of sample playback are these: samples load instantaneously, they can be in mono or stereo, and there's support for simple looping (for sustain purposes) and key-group multisampling, but not velocity switching or round-robin alternation. Also there are no facilities for exploring loop lengths on the fly from the front panel, granular-style, or indeed reversing them, like on the Prophet X. In short, sample playback is effective but relatively simplistic, more akin to a ROMpler than a true sampler.

Quite a bit of the sample content in the factory set utilises a hidden filter and envelope structure, more than anything to make it sound right on recent Nord Electros and Pianos, which don't expose any synthesis parameters. These baked-in settings can be overridden on the Wave 2, though, and prominent attack phases similarly skipped to get to the raw, sustaining harmonic content.

A sample oscillator can be subject to the same range of coarse and fine tuning (±24 semitones and ±50 cents) as its Analog counterpart, and I was pleased to see that when you dial in a -1 octave playback pitch for the oscillator but apply a +1 octave shift for the entire layer (using buttons near the pitch stick and mod wheel) the audible result is at the original pitch but spectrally skewed. That opens up useful creative possibilities.

It's fundamentally well-rounded and unpretentious, but is capable of turning out a constant stream of classy and very usable sounds with astonishing ease.

Digital

The FM implementation offers 10 algorithms using 2, 3 or 4 operators. It's simpler than a typical Yamaha implementation: technically speaking, there's only ever one modulator with variable pitch/ratio. But that makes it miles easier to use, with the three-knob oscillator section combo generating a broad range of harmonic, distorted and experimental inharmonic spectra.

DX-oriented electric pianos (et al) in the factory Programs recall the sound of Yamaha's simpler 4-operator engine of yore, but there's also scope for creating novel tones, more towards Elektron Digitone territory. And of course the FM oscillator (like all other types) outputs into the filter and effects, so it's trivially easy to sculpt things further down the line.

As for the wavetable mode, that encompasses 46 discrete waveforms in various groups, some naturalistic, others synthetic. No interpolation between waves is available, so think of these as a bank of static digital waves in the manner of a late '80s Korg DW rather than a Waldorf Quantum, say. Any nuancing will need to come from the filter, but they're still a useful addition to the Wave 2 armoury.

Filter & Envelopes

With the oscillators finally behind us, let's turn to the Wave 2 filter. This offers three low-pass types: a lively and open 12dB/octave, a generic 24dB type and a Moog ladder emulation. Then there's a non-resonant LP+HP dual 12dB filter which can rather magically recall the sleek, sizzly nature of an Oberheim SEM or other continuously variable filter. Finally there's both a normal band-pass and a high-pass.

Other features are simple but effective, like keyboard tracking and drive with three preset levels, and an invertible ADSR that's optionally velocity responsive.

The dedicated amp ADSR has an interesting Transient option, to add a driven thump/spike to the first few milliseconds of the attack phase. Meanwhile the Osc Mod envelope is a switchable AD or A[S]R design that's routable to oscillator pitch or Osc Ctrl only, with positive or negative polarity. An obvious role for it is to modulate one of the Sync waveforms, to generate a falling sync 'howl' on every key press.

The LFO Situation

The Wave 2 has fewer LFOs than many other synths. At first glance there seems to be just one, with multiple waveforms (including sample & hold), sync'able to the on-board clock or incoming MIDI clock, but no delayed onset options, and routing only to Osc Ctrl (for PWM and the like), Osc Pitch or Filter cutoff. It's monophonic, working on all voices in a layer at once, rather than individually.

There is another LFO, though, in the form of the one-button Vibrato section: it's polyphonic this time, with a fixed sine wave, and affecting oscillator pitch only. Three delay options (of 0.25, 1 and 1.5 seconds) are available, or it can be brought on by the mod wheel or aftertouch. Vibrato rate and amount are about the only sound-affecting parameters on the whole synth that do not have dedicated controls, but can be varied (within modest limits, it must be said) from the nearby OLED.

Modulation & Morphs

Conspicuous by its absence on the Wave 2 is any kind of modulation matrix. Taking its place (alongside the hardwired modulation destination options in the Osc Mod envelope, main LFO, and for the modulation wheel) is a Morph system that'll be familiar to users of some other Nords but potentially unfamiliar to everyone else.

The concept is simple. Key velocity, aftertouch, mod wheel and an expression pedal are seen as potential control/modulation sources. By holding one of the dedicated Morph buttons for each, and moving front-panel knobs or faders, the source is tied to parameter values across any desired range, and in either polarity. You might for example have aftertouch simultaneously raising filter cutoff and increasing LFO rate, reducing resonance and filter drive, and making the reverb wetter. And it can do that while an expression pedal fades out one layer and brings in three more, for example. Most continuous parameters on the front panel are fair game, and when they're involved in a morph, a little LED indicator next to them lights up.

There's also Impulse Morph, a feature carried over from the Lead 4 that delivers momentary, instantaneous parameter value changes when its button (in the cluster of performance controls) is pressed. Even more parameters are available to this, as it can enable or disable entire sections (like filter, arpeggiator, effects) or toggle modes (octave shift, arpeggiator direction, delay/reverb type, and so on).

The Morph system has an impressive ability to allow a lot of expressive real-time control to be set up in seconds, in a tactile and intuitive manner. Elaborate and more extreme use can make for some jaw-droppingly potent and dynamic effects. But it is primarily a performance-based feature, and for synthesists with really specific programming requirements, like exploring recursive modulation or modulator-on-modulator action, it may not go far enough. The one modulation aspect I really missed was any kind of keyboard scaling so that I could, for example, have envelope time vary with pitch. Still, Morphs are a friendly and fruitful feature that kept me happy for hours, and always seem to have something more to offer.

Arpeggiator

Arpeggiators are always fun, and this one adds a couple of extra twists. Expected options (see photo, above) are all there: up, down, up/down and random directions, over one to four octaves, plus a zig-zag alternative that leapfrogs steps. However, Poly makes all the same shapes but plays the full held chord (and inversions of it) rather than individual component notes. Gate effectively turns the arp into a slicer: an audio effect that rhythmically silences held notes without retriggering their envelopes, and with variable slice 'hardness'. Then, available to all three modes is a further Pattern option, which can impose a sequence of varying note length, rests, and left/centre/right pan per step. This adds hugely to the flexibility, and because the four arpeggiators (one on each layer) can sync to the on-board clock or incoming MIDI clock, elaborate interplays can be set up: even simple forms of drum programming are possible.

Clock, incidentally, distributes to the LFO, multi-effects section and the delay, so sync opportunities are abundant.

Effects

Effects processing is an undoubted highlight of the Wave 2. Each layer has a multi-effect switchable between Tremolo, Autopan, Ring Mod, Phaser, Chorus, Ensemble and Vibe (a chorus/vibrato combo) feeding an EQ that's switchable between two-band Bass/Treble and a single sweepable mid, alongside a Drive/distortion. Then it's on to a Delay with switchable digital/analogue character and ping-pong, and the possibility to insert both a chorus, vibe or ensemble effect and LP/BP/HP filters into the feedback path. Finally, there's a Reverb, with five algorithms ranging from Booth to Cathedral, with optional Bright/Dark EQ/damping and 'chorale' modulation.

The fact that layer effects are truly independent — so that's 16 simultaneously active effects potentially — feels lavish and liberating. There are no irksome limitations with shared top-level send/return relationships, or arbitrary CPU limits, and the quality across the board is very high. Sections turn on and off glitch-free too: you can 'play' them manually or via an Impulse Morph. The Chorus isn't the lushest I've ever heard, but it's far from the worst. Reverbs range from naturalistic to pleasantly processed and the simple EQ can work wonders adding a final bolster to a bass or rolling off a buzzy pad.

Red-y reckoning

At this point I could spend a paragraph or two pontificating, but instead I'll cast cool professionalism aside and blurt that I absolutely love the Wave 2: its sound, just as much as its immediacy and versatility.

The analogue side of things can be liquid and lush or downright dirty and potent. Apart from that one hint in the filter section — the 'M' in the Moog-style filter — it's clearly not trying to sound like others synths from history. But I was amazed by the extent to which it could. One of my first programming explorations ended up deep in '70s Jarre territory: I stayed there for hours, happily reliving my (all too rapidly receding) childhood. Another conjured up (courtesy of the apparently innocuous but positively glowing 33 percent pulse wave) totally convincing CS80 sounds that few other synths I've used have got close to. Then there's that LP+HP filter, that might make OB‑6 owners think long and hard: it did me. Multi and Super waves scream Moog and '90s Roland (sometimes literally) and the BP filter mode plus phaser/ensemble effect can conjure up a string machine timbre out of even unpromising starting points. During the test period the Wave 2 was parked alongside Sequential's superb new Pro 3, and whilst I could, if I set out to do it, discern a difference in some aspects of filter sweetness and sheer oscillator clout, the outcome was rarely clear cut, and often a case of 'different' rather than better or worse.

The FM and Wavetable modes are valuable, but the other real star of the show is sample playback. To have instant access to naturalistic strings, analogue Solinas and Eminents, a huge Mellotron and Chamberlin sound set, choirs, guitars, percussion and everything else in the free-to-download Nord Sample Library extends the range of the Wave 2 hugely. Limitlessly of course, since you can sample and load in synths and other instruments you want to have on hand. The lack of velocity switching and round-robins does limit the scope, certainly, but not by as much as you might think: Nord Sample Library sounds are frequently entirely plausible and playable, and extract maximum musicality from surprisingly small sample sizes. The crucial aspect always is that samples exist within an identical synth and effects architecture to analogue waves, part of the overall four-layer design, and therefore apt to be creatively deployed and combined.

Any major downsides? There's the single mono LFO (not anyone's first choice for the lushest PWM pads), the rather conventional and limited vibrato LFO, and limited modulation destinations generally, which the Morph system helps make up for but doesn't directly replace. I sometimes wished for variable envelope slopes (as offered by the ASM Hydrasynth for example), and would also take Sequential-inspired stereo voice spread and analogue slop parameters to loosen things up on occasion. Experimentalists should note there's no support for alternative tunings, and all you bass addicts, be aware that Wave 2 oscillators appear to randomise their onset phase each time a voice is triggered, so you'll get an unpredictable series of phase cancellations when playing repeated notes with a pair of similar-sounding unison or close-tuned oscillators. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but the addition of a 'keyboard reset' option would add a valuable additional flavour.

In the final reckoning, though, there's so much to commend this new Nord. It strikes a brilliant balance between simplicity and capability. It's fundamentally well-rounded and unpretentious, but is capable of turning out a constant stream of classy and very usable sounds with astonishing ease. The multi-layer design is a big part of its strength; so will be the delightfully unhampered effects implementation for all those users (like me) who regard effects as integral to sound design. You might still want a modular system or a matrix-equipped monster to support more out-there sound design voyages, but for everything else, the Wave 2 is a go-to, do-anything synth like few others.

Alternatives

Two other synths, the Sequential Prophet X and the Waldorf Quantum, offer knobby subtractive synthesis alongside sample replay. Both can mangle samples to a far greater degree, but are more expensive and offer nothing close to the Wave 2's polyphony. If you can live without samples, then the 16-voice, two-part Novation Summit has much to commend it.

Apps

Nord's Sample Editor application creates and transfers user sample sets to the Wave 2 onboard memory.

Two Windows/macOS utilities are available to download and use with the Wave 2 for free. Nord Sample Editor lets you put together your own sample sets in drag-and-drop fashion from WAVs and AIFFs. Nord Sound Manager is a librarian, which organises, reorders and renames Programs and linked samples, and can backup or restore entire banks or indeed dumps of the whole instrument. Both are reliable and easy to use, and put many other manufacturers' efforts (or indeed non-efforts) to shame.

Pros

  • A colourful and convincing analogue character alongside sample replay and FM.
  • The multitimbral design (including fully independent FX) supports layers, splits and sequencing, with ample polyphony.
  • Clear one-knob-per-function interface with almost no menu-diving.
  • Quality five-octave keyboard with lots of real-time control options.
  • Excellent supporting software.

Cons

  • Very ambitious programmers may find the synth architecture too limited.
  • Sample content not 'explorable': no means to adjust start point or loop parameters (for example) from front-panel controls.
  • Wavetables are preset, with no interpolation between waves.

Summary

A friendly, fast, and super-versatile polysynth, with sample replay abilities embedded in an effective synthesis architecture, and impressive multitimbral chops.
