It’s now more than a decade since Hugh Robjohns reviewed the original incarnation of NUGEN Audio’s MasterCheck. Back in 2015, the music production world was still adjusting to the new landscape of streaming services with loudness normalisation. MasterCheck’s primary purpose was to measure the loudness of programme material and inform the user of the extent to which a given streamer might turn it down on playback.
Such is the pace of change that many of the playback standards to which Hugh’s review refers are no longer relevant. NUGEN have of course updated MasterCheck to be compatible with newer platforms, and in 2017, they released an enhanced version with a major new feature. MasterCheck Pro didn’t just show you how the loudness of your track would be affected by streaming. It also let you hear what the codecs used by streaming services would do to it.
