Tegeler Audio Manufaktur VTRC Audio Examples

These audio examples accompany Hannes Bieger’s review of the Tegeler Audio Manufaktur Vari Tube Recording Channel in SOS January 2016. For the best results, download the ZIP file and audition the WAV files in your DAW.

Vocals

This example shows how well the Vari Tube works with different microphones. A Neumann U67 and a TLM103 are generations apart, and that they follow totally different technical concepts is evident in their sound. Yet, Tegeler’s channel strip renders the differences with great accuracy. The preamp gain is controlled by way of reducing the negative feedback in the input valve stage, and this clearly affects the sound character. Between a fairly airy and open tone and a more dense, warmer mid range there are plenty variations to explore. The filenames reveal the settings used.

  • 01: U67 maximum negative feedback
  • 02: U67 minimum negative feedback
  • 03: TLM103 maximum negative feedback
  • 04: TLM103 minimum negative feedback

Processed Vocals

These examples demonstrate the capabilities of the passive Pultec–style three–band EQ and dual optical/variable-mu compressor section. Again, the filenames let you know what’s going on in each example.

  • 01: Lowcut 80Hz, Boost 7kHz
  • 02: Lowcut 80Hz, Boost 200Hz, Boost 7kHz
  • 03: Lowcut 80Hz, Boost 200Hz, Boost 7kHz, Opto (auto)
  • 04: Lowcut 80Hz, Boost 200Hz, Boost 7kHz, Vari Mu (auto)
  • 05: Lowcut 80Hz, Boost 200Hz, Boost 7kHz, both comps (auto)
  • 06: Lowcut 80Hz, Boost 200Hz, Boost 7kHz, Vari Mu (fast)

Bass

The Vari Tube is a versatile unit that sounds wonderful on vocals, but it sounds great on other sources, too. These examples demonstrate it in action on a Fender Precision bass guitar.

  • 01: pure DI
  • 02: Boost 80Hz, Boost 2kHz
  • 03: Boost 80Hz, Boost 2kHz, Opto (auto)
  • 04: Boost 80 Hz, Boost 2kHz, Opto (fast)
  • 05: Boost 80Hz, Boost 2kHz, Opto (slow)
