A classic effects unit is reborn in plug‑in form.

Ensoniq were innovators in the worlds of sampling and digital synthesis. Their ‘transwave’ synths like the Fizmo have a cult following among musicians, whilst in the world of mixing, it’s their multi‑effects processors that attract fond reminiscences. Released in 1992, the DP/4 featured four independent digital processors that could be operated in a number of different series and parallel configurations. Each of these engines could run a wide range of algorithms including reverb, delays, modulation, pitch‑shift and even amp and cabinet simulation.

Recreating digital processors from this period in software is a serious challenge. Since they use specialised DSP chips rather than embedded PCs, the code can’t easily be ported across, but at the same time, it’s too sophisticated and complex to be easily reverse‑engineered. John Wheeler of Temecula DSP has thus carved out a niche in plug‑in world by developing new techniques for emulating complex legacy digital code in software. These involve the use of AI coding assistants to verify the output of his recreated algorithms, but this is definitely not ‘vibe coding’!
