This versatile vowel filter packs some powerful and creative modulation options.
I mpressed by UB DSP’s debut release, Grit Blender (SOS July 2026) I was keen to check out their follow‑up, called Vowel Blender. Essentially, it’s a vowel‑based filter that allows you to inject a sense of ‘vocalisation’ into almost any sound — and while that in itself isn’t a new concept, UB DSP have applied their ‘blender’ idea to it to create an effect that’s brimming with creative potential.
Vowel Movement
Vowel Blender’s 10 phonetic vowel filters are arranged within the X/Y pad, with their locations being based on their phonetic ‘positions’ (front/back on the X axis, and open/closed on the Y axis). As you move the cursor, it provides a blend of the four closest vowel nodes, based on their relative distance to the cursor. The knobs below the X/Y pad provide control (manual or automatable) over the X/Y position, and a Snap knob determines how ‘magnetic’ each vowel node is, as the cursor moves within the 2D space.
The frequency display shows your audio signal and the currently applied filter shapes, which update in real time. You can change the width of the filters (Q), offset their pitch (Shift) and add some soft saturation (Drive), while the Mix knob controls the wet/dry balance. This one is important: higher values are the way to go for obvious spot effects, but with very low values Vowel Blender can add just a little subtle movement to almost any sound. A niche effect? Perhaps. But I loved it, and found a lot of creative applications for it.

There’s also a very powerful modulation system. This offers, among other modulator types, standard LFOs, a step sequencer, a multi‑segment envelope, an envelope follower, a macro knob and, of course, MIDI CC control. You can build all sorts of weird and wonderful modulation combinations here to drive how the filters are applied.
Amongst the range of other useful features (for example, the ability to bypass processing below a user‑defined frequency, and different stereo modes), a Voice Model feature lets you pick between seven different vowel sets (three female, three male and one labelled ‘kids’), each of which changes the character of the filters. Clicking on the Character button (top right) opens a further control panel, through which you can tweak each Voice Model further. As well as Human, Breath, Size and Transpose, these include the intriguing Alien control: so if sci‑fi sound design is your thing, there’s a knob for that!

I’ll Take A Vowel Please...
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I first installed Vowel Shaper. But I have to say that I ended up very impressed. Yes, it’s obviously great for adding movement to synth pad sounds, or turning these into rhythmic sounds using more extreme settings. And, yes, talkbox and vocoder‑style effects, or using modulation to create filter‑based risers or drops, are all on offer. But just how easily I could blend a subtle touch of Vowel Shaper into almost any kind of sound source and to ratchet the sonic interest up a notch was a pleasant surprise.
As with Grit Blender, UB DSP have taken a very specific existing processing concept, and build around it an impressive suite of options that lets you realise its full sonic potential. But don’t take my word for it... There’s a free trial, so you can explore the joys of blending vowels with your own sounds — and I assure you, you’ll have a lot of fun in the process!
Summary
Vowel Blender is both creative and fun to use. While it may seem like something of a niche effect, used subtly, it can bring a unique sense of movement to almost any sound source.
