While Studio Piano was designed to work with Logic’s Session Player, you can of course play it yourself. It includes a number of sound‑shaping features, such as adjustable pedal, key and release noise.
We put Logic’s new Studio Piano instrument through its paces.
Whilst keyboard instruments have a history stretching back thousands of years, the piano as we know it emerged in the early 1700s. Since then, it’s fair to say that pianos have been perennially in fashion, and perhaps even more so today. Pianos are among the most beautiful and versatile instruments in any music production palette, capable of providing rhythm, harmony and melody across virtually any genre from classical and jazz through to rock, pop and electronica. Logic Pro has long catered to this demand by offering a decent range of multisampled pianos, courtesy of the Sampler (formerly EXS24) instrument, and more recently the dedicated Studio Piano. Introduced with Logic Pro 11, this user‑friendly instrument provides access to three distinct pianos: a concert grand, a studio grand and a vintage upright.
Studio Piano is “optimised for use with” the Keyboard Session Player, and as such, it’s a genuinely valuable addition to the Session Player ecosystem. But on its own, it’s an eminently playable MIDI instrument. Forget the plethora of parameters in the Sampler; this accessible instrument offers a far simpler interface, while still providing useful options for sound configuration. It’s inherently straightforward: select a piano type, adjust the volume and microphone balance (where available), and finally tweak just four additional parameters to tailor your piano aesthetic.
