Practical Strategies For Short-form & Small-speaker Listening By Justin Sheriff

Most listeners discover music on phones, where attention spans are short!

Mixing for MobileListening habits have changed considerably over the last decade or so, and in a couple of important ways. First, perhaps most obviously, a great deal of music is now first encountered not through studio monitors, nice hi‑fi systems, or even car stereos, but rather through a pair of consumer earbuds (whether wired or wireless), or perhaps even a phone’s tiny built‑in speaker. Some estimates put headphone/earbud listening as high as 80 percent, maybe more. Second, and maybe more importantly, whatever the playback system we’re listening on, many of us now encounter new music more passively — for example through short‑form videos or preview clips, or in a scroll‑based feed. These are all contexts in which our attention span is limited, and very easily diverted.

For a significant portion of listeners, then, their first impression of our music is formed within a few seconds, often in a fragmented context, and often when listening on devices with limited low‑frequency extension and reduced dynamic range.

While none of this should change the main goals of mixing (plenty of people still enjoy listening on full‑range systems, at home, on good headphones, in cars or in the cinema, and they won’t appreciate compromises), it does change the conditions under which our mixes are most often judged. Consequently, some of the mix decisions that might, in traditional listening environments, have felt secondary — questions of midrange balance, transient clarity, or arrangement density, for instance — could now be far more important in determining whether a mix will be perceived by most listeners as clear and engaging, or unfocused and lacking impact.

Obviously, of those two outcomes, ‘clear and engaging’ is our goal! So what, exactly, might we consider changing about how we approach our mixes, to make that the more likely first impression? Well, the aim certainly isn’t to optimise mixes exclusively for phones or consumer earbuds, and what I said just above bears repeating: if we simply cater for the lowest common denominator, we lose the opportunity to impress more discerning listeners.

Rather, we need to aim to achieve two things:

1. Ensure our mixes translate consistently across a wider range of playback systems, including those with a restricted bandwidth and limited headroom; and

2. Address the problem of passive listening and short attention spans.

In order to achieve (1) we must understand how different playback systems reshape what the listener actually hears, and how we can shape our mixes to take account of that. For example, small speakers and many compact earbuds tend to emphasise the midrange, and limit both sub‑bass reproduction and spatial depth.

To achieve (2) we have to be very deliberate about how we choose to present the core elements in the mix. Remember, they’re probably not actively trying to listen; they’re encountering your music while doing something else. So it pays to adopt a more intentional approach to prioritisation. Which elements must be clearly understood within the first few seconds? Which parts of the arrangement are essential? Which simply contribute density or texture, without improving clarity?

Midrange: The Main Event

Let’s now dive a little deeper into how we might cater for the most common playback systems. On small speakers and many earbuds, the midrange effectively carries the mix. To put some numbers on that, a frequency range of approximately 500Hz to 4kHz dominates our perception, and for vocals the 1‑4 kHz region is particularly important for intelligibility; it’s where the sounds that allow us to distinguish between consonants tend to lie. Too little energy in these regions, and the mix feels distant or muddy, and will lack clarity. Too much, and it becomes harsh and exhausting, especially on earbuds that may be ‘voiced’ to put that range ‘forward’.

The challenge, though, is not simply to boost the midrange content, or even judge the right overall level, but rather to manage the overlap between the various sources that sit in this part of the spectrum. Vocals, guitars, synths, pianos, snare presence and more already jostle for space here, in just a few octaves, and simply panning them for better separation won’t work, as the playback system may well be mono or at least have little by way of stereo imaging (a phone speaker, common kitchen or bathroom radios, and many portable Bluetooth speakers, for example). Careful EQ and level balancing and conscious arrangement decisions to ensure good separation tend to be more effective than aggressive boosting and cutting, or even more sophisticated mix techniques like ducking with side‑chain compression. When all this is done well, the result is a mix that feels present and intelligible without becoming abrasive. Of course, not every instrument naturally sits in the midrange. If the airy highs of a mix can’t be conveyed very well on a phone or earbuds, that’s probably not a problem — nice to hear but not essential to the music. But what about the low end? Small speakers...
