"Mark partition as active"

I have bought a couple of external 500 gig USB drives and formatting them as NTFS. But after creating the partition it asks if I want to make the partition active. On the Microsoft web site it says only make a partition 'active' if it is going to have an operating system installed on it.

On other web sites it says this only applies if it is the c:drive (or first drive the bios sees)

After partitioning and formatting, one PC will 'see' the drive and the other PC doesn't saying 'this drive is not formatted do you want to format it now?' even though it has been formatted and works ok on the other PC

Will making it 'active' fix this problem?

I only have a little test data on the drives so far to check I can navigate folders etc

No it won't - I think the front USB ports on one PC is dodgy. On the 2 other PCs the work fine
