best music composition software

hello all,
looking for some good software that enables me to hear my compositions back, but minus the horrid midi sounds.maybe something that is synth orientated in terms of playback, or anything that has playback qualities that are just pleasing to the ear(more advanced).although i haven't used sibelius, i have heard examples from friends etc, and i just find it unbearable to listen to arrangements produced on it.
