A lot can depend on whether you are using a desktop or laptop computer. Some laptops are fine - mine works with a 32 sample buffer size if I switch off the wifi, but others are much less accommodating and don't like anything less than 256 samples or sometimes even more. I think most modern desktops should go down to 64 samples without too much trouble at a 44100 sample rate. How low do you need to go? I use 32 samples to monitor my V-Drums while triggering a drum sample library. The interface may also have its own internal buffers that add a constant latency overhead to the DAW buffer size.

I tend to agree with Pete

A more powerful computer can help reduce latency without glitching if it has well-chosen components and is well set up.

However, its ultimate performance can still be crippled if you are using an audio interface with poorly written drivers
